Freshmen Lead Tigers Past Vermont
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Princeton women's hockey team toppled Vermont, 3-1 on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Baker Rink with three different freshmen scoring for the Tigers. Danielle DiCesare led the Tigers with a goal and an assist, as Princeton dominated the game, taking 36 shots to Vermont's eight.
Despite a 10-4 shot advantage in the first period, it was Vermont (3-9) that took the early lead. The Catamounts grabbed a 1-0 lead at 13:10 when Erin Barley-Maloney scored a power-play goal on the first extra-man chance of the game.
Princeton (3-5) responded quickly to start the second period with a power-play goal of its own. DiCesare ripped a shot from the point that bounced around in traffic, before junior Melanie Wallace poked it free and freshman Paula Romanchuk put her stick on the puck and slipped in past Vermont's Ashley Walenty at 00:53.
DiCesare added another eight minutes later, with a blistering shot that went over the shoulder of Walenty. Junior defender Stephanie Denino earned the assist on the goal.
The Tigers weren't done yet as freshman Charissa Standynk made it 3-1 Princeton at 12:33 of the second. Senior Christine Foster delivered a great pass in the slot to Standynk and she easily banked in the shot. Sophomore Sasha Sherry picked up credit with the first assist on the play.
Kristen Young made seven saves in net for Princeton, and Walenty stopped 33 shots.
Princeton went 1-for-5 on the power play, and Vermont went 1-for-4.
Princeton returns to Baker Rink next weekend, Nov. 21-22, hosting St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Game times are at 7 p.m., and 4 p.m., respectively.
