Duggan Sets Record, Leads Saints Past Big Green
CANTON, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence University senior assistant captain
Carson Duggan broke the school’s goal record with the 86th of
her career on Friday night, and thanks to a fantastic performance
in goal by junior Brittony Chartier, the goal was an insurance
tally in the No. 8 Saints’ 3-0 upset over No. 3 Dartmouth at
Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence improved to 6-1-2 overall and remained perfect in
ECAC Hockey play at 3-0-0, while Dartmouth suffered their first
loss of the season, falling to 5-1-0 (4-1-0).
Though the two teams found themselves scoreless after the opening
period, there were plenty of chances for each team to grab the
early lead. However, Chartier and Dartmouth netminder Carli Clemis
stole the show in the first period, making nine and 15 saves,
respectively. St. Lawrence seemed to have the majority of the
quality scoring chances, as sophomore Karell Emard and senior
Jordan Pyers were both robbed by Clemis on the door step.
Special teams would clearly tilt in favor of the home team, as an
impressive power play chance would give the Scarlet and Brown a 1-0
edge at 13:12 of the second period. Junior defenseman Courtney
Sawchuk skated the puck along the boards, and after beating a
defender, she fired a pass to the top of the crease for a waiting
Alison Domenico. The Nepean, ON native re-directed the pass over
Clemis’ right shoulder and into the net for her sixth goal of
the season and a 1-0 advantage.
Each goaltender continued to play at a high level in the second
stanza, as Clemis robbed Duggan on a breakaway chance to keep it a
one-goal deficit for the Big Green, while Chartier returned the
favor against Dartmouth forward Maggie Kennedy.
Dartmouth had two quick back-to-back power play chances to open
the third period, but the Saints’ penalty killing unit was up
to the task. As the final seconds ticked off of junior Tara
Akstull’s penalty, Duggan stole the puck in the offensive
zone, and after a sleek move helped her elude a defender, she found
herself with a one-on-one chance against the Dartmouth
goaltender.
Though her initial shot was stopped, the rebound bounced high into
the air, and the Ma-Me-O Beach, AL native was able to slap it out
of midair and under the cross bar for the record-setting goal and a
2-0 lead at 7:46 of the third period. The Appleton crowd gave her a
standing ovation, as the short-handed tally not only broke Sabrina
Harbec’s record, but added a key insurance goal against a
nationally-ranked foe.
“That was a pretty typical Carson Duggan goal,” said
St. Lawrence University head coach Chris Wells. “She’s
a natural scorer and she finds ways to put the puck in the net. She
had a few chances throughout the game, but (Carli) Clemis made some
great stops. We’re obviously all very proud of Carson’s
accomplishment, and we’re glad it helped us get a key
conference victory.”
The goal seemed to lift St. Lawrence and give them all of the
momentum, as they were able to come right back only 1:42 later and
make it 3-0 on Emard’s second goal of 2008-09. Emard was able
to bang in a slap shot after a feed from senior assistant captain
Lisa Batchelor to make it a 3-0 game with 10:32 to play in
regulation.
The Big Green would control much of the offense for the remaining
half of the period, as they finished the third period with an
impressive 14-6 advantage in shots on goal. However, Chartier was
fantastic, as she made save after save including a sprawling glove
save on what appeared to be a tap-in goal in the final minutes. Her
31-save effort was the difference as she earned her second shutout
of the season.
“That was about as good a team effort as we’ve had all
season,” continued Coach Wells. “I thought the forwards
set the tempo, the defense showed great composure with the puck and
when Dartmouth forced the issue in transition, (Brittony) Chartier
was able to keep them from getting second chances.”
Though the visitors finished with a slight 31-30 advantage in
shots on goal, the Saints’ used a 1-for-3 night on the power
play to earn the victory. Dartmouth was held without a power play
tally, finishing 0-for-5 with the extra skater.
The win was also the first of the season for St. Lawrence over a
ranked opponent and gave the Saints a 15-14-2 edge in the all-time
series with the Big Green.
The Scarlet and Brown will look for their sixth consecutive
victory on Saturday afternoon when they take on another
nationally-ranked team, No. 4 Harvard University, at Appleton
Arena. The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Crimson at 4:00pm.
