Bobcats Dropped by Vermont

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team lost 3-1 to the University of Vermont at the TD Banknorth Sports Center Friday night. With the loss the Bobcats fall to 2-10-1 while the Catamounts improve to 3-8-0.

The Catamounts got on the board first at the 12:28 mark of the first period when Saleah Morrison received the puck in front of the net and fired a shot over the left shoulder of Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart (Vancouver Island, British Columbia). Erin Barley-Maloney and Teddy Fortin were credited with the assists.

Vermont struck again with 20 seconds remaining in the first period. The Catamounts won a faceoff to the left of Wishart and Kyleigh Palmer took a quick shot on net. The puck deflected off Wishart's glove into the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Barley-Maloney recorded the assist for her second of the game.

The Catmounts made it 3-0 at the 9:09 mark of the third period. In a scramble in front of the goal Palmer slipped the puck between Wishart's pads for her second goal of the game. Assisting on the goal were Fortin and Shannon Bellefeuille.

The Bobcats pulled to within two with 5:45 remiaining in the third period. Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario) sent a pass from the Quinnipiac defensive zone to Chelsea Illchuk (Lockhart, Manitoba) at center ice. Illchuk carried the puck on a breakaway and snapped a shot above the left shoulder of Vermont goaltender Kristen Olychuck's for her first career goal. The assist was Duffy's team-leading sixth of the season and her 10th point, also a team lead.

Quinnipiac goaltender's Tia Wishart and Nanna Holm Glaas combined to stop 15 shots by Vermont. Olychuck made 16 saves for the Catamounts.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they take on Boston University at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
