Harvard Blanked by Clarkson
POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Christina Kessler made 18 saves for the
Crimson, but the No. 4 Harvard women’s hockey team dropped a
2-0 decision at Clarkson Friday evening.
The Crimson and Golden Knights battled to a scoreless first period
with Clarkson holding an 8-6 advantage in shots after the first 20
minutes of play. Each team was 0-for-1 on the power play in the
opening stanza.
In the second, Clarkson managed the first three shots and earned a
power-play at 5:29 after Harvard was called for tripping. Just
after a minute into play with an extra attacker, Clarkson’s
Melissa Waldie found the back of the net on the first shot of the
Clarkson power play. Marie-Jo Gaudet and Genevieve Lavoie fed
Waldie the puck and were credited with assists on the goal at
6:34.
Harvard (3-1-1, 3-1-1 ECAC Hockey) recorded 10 of the game’s
next 15 shots, but could not break through the Clarkson defense as
the contest moved to the third. After two, the Crimson controlled a
large advantage in faceoffs, 27-13, and led in shots, 19-17.
The Crimson opened the third with quick shots by Katharine Chute,
Jenny Brine and Randi Griffin, but all three attempts were snared
by Lauren Dahm. Harvard killed off a penalty midway through the
third and tried to build momentum, earning its own power play a
minute later. The Crimson managed three shots on the ensuing
advantage, including two by Sarah Vaillancourt, but Dahm stood tall
to prevent the equalizer.
Harvard killed off another penalty later in the third at 15:15,
earning four short-handed shots during the two minutes. The Crimson
pressure drew an infraction on Clarkson, neutralizing the Golden
Knight power play.
With 1:51 remaining in the third, Harvard pulled Kessler, giving
the Crimson an extra attacker to seek the equalizer. However, the
Crimson was not able to net a goal before Clarkson added an empty
net score. Gabrielle Kosziwka moved the puck to Gaudet who skated
towards the Harvard zone and lifted the puck into the empty cage
for the Golden Knights’ second tally.
The Crimson dominated in shots, 16-3, in the third period, and
held a 35-20 advantage for the game. Harvard concluded the contest
0-for-5 on the power play, while Clarkson (4-5-2, 2-1-0) scored on
one of its four chances.
Vaillancourt paced the Crimson and had a game-high with seven
shots, while Liza Ryabkina recorded five.
Harvard closes out its road trip at No. 8 St. Lawrence Saturday
afternoon at 4 p.m.
