Sass, Stewart Guide Colgate Past Yale
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Junior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.)
recorded two goals and freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass (East
Amherst, N.Y.) made 33 saves as the Colgate women’s hockey
team defeated Yale 4-2 Friday evening at Starr Rink. With the win
Sass becomes the first Colgate goaltender to record a win in her
first five starts.
Colgate, 7-5 overall and 2-1 in ECAC Hockey fell behind in the
opening period when Helen Resor beat Sass at the 6:14 mark.
Resor’s initial shot flew over Sass, but she was able snag
her own rebound of the boards to net her second attempt.
The Raiders scored during their first power-play mid-way through
the first as junior Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) cleaned
house in front of Yale goaltender Jackee Snikeris for her fourth of
the season. Sophomore Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) who took
the initial shot and junior Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) were
both credited with an assist.
Sass faced 15 shots in the opening period to keep the score tied
1-1 at the first break.
Both teams came out firing to begin the second as Stewart recorded
her first of the game just 26 seconds into the period. But the
Bulldogs responded 22 seconds later as Crysti Howser recorded her
sixth of the season off the initial face-off following a hooking
penalty to senior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.).
Dombovy would end the scoring in the second with the eventual game
winner and her fourth of the season at the 12 minute mark to give
Colgate a 3-2 edge for the second intermission.
The two teams combined for 56 shots and eight power-play
opportunities in the first two periods.
Stewart extended the Colgate lead to 4-2 with her second of the
game at the 13:40 mark of the third. Senior Kiira Dosdall
(Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Hannah Milan (Great Barrington,
Mass.) both assisted on the goal that was more then enough for
Sass.
The Raiders out-shot Yale 43-35 for the game. Sass made 33 saves
in the win while Snikeris recorded 39 for Yale. Colgate finished
2-5 on the power play while the Bulldogs went 1-5.
