ORONO, ME -- Junior defender Jackie Koetteritz scored with five seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and help Union to a 2-2 tie at Maine on Saturday. The Dutchwomen, who held a 31-14 advantage in shots, mounted the comeback late to move to 2-16-1. Maine goes to 4-13-2.

Koetteritz registered her third goal of the season after a wrap around attempt by freshman forward Emilie Arseneault was kicked out to the point. The junior fired a wrist shot blocker side and secured the tie.

Freshman forward Kelly Alyea started the scoring for Union with her second career goal, cutting Maine’s lead to one with 6:25 remaining the game. The goal was setup by sophomore Callie Heywood and senior co-captain Stephanie Gilbert.

The Dutchwomen almost knotted things up moments later with chances from freshmen Adelle Calahan and Chelsey Heinhuis. With senior goaltender Lundy Day pulled, freshman forward Lauren Hoffman was hit with a long breakout pass. After a deke, she fired on goal from the inside hash only to have her shot turned away.

In overtime both team’s registered two shots that both goaltenders handled with ease.

Using their speed, the Dutchwomen controlled the majority of action in the first period. The 5-2 shot advantage for Union didn’t justify Union’s dominance early. The line of freshman Molly Kate Devin, sophomore Marissa Gentile and Arseneault caused havoc early with a scrum in from of Maine’s net 4:30 into the game. Despite several cracks, Maine netminder Candice Currier kept the puck out of the net from her backside.

Arseneault blocked a shot at the top of her defensive end and raced for a breakaway seven minutes into the contest, but Currier made the stop and kept the game scoreless.

Union threatened late in the second with a five-on-three power play and generated the puck to Gentile at the point. With three student-athletes down low, the Dutchwomen worked the puck to Koetteritz, who continued to dish to Gentile at the top of the left circle.

The Black Bears broke through with goals early in the second and third period. Junior defender Lexie Hoffmeyer scored her fourth goal of the season 2:54 into the second and freshman forward Dawn Sullivan registered her third goal of the year 56 ticks into the third. Her goal was setup by junior forward Jenna Ouellete.

Day made 12 saves, while Currier made 29.

The Dutchwomen return to the ice and ECAC Hockey play on Friday Jan. 9 with a 7 p.m. contest against Quinnipiac at Messa Rink
