Princeton Knocks Off No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. -- Freshman Julie Johnson scored two goals and
senior goaltender Kristen Young stopped 37 shots as the Princeton
women’s hockey team knocked off third-ranked Minnesota-Duluth
4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The game got off to a frantic start as both teams scored in the
first minute of the game. Pernilla Winberg put the Bulldogs ahead
14 seconds into the game, only to have senior Annie Greenwood
answer for Princeton 24 seconds later with her third goal of the
season unassisted. Six minutes later, Johnson connected with her
first goal of the game and third goal of the season with an assist
from senior Katherine Dineen.
The teams traded goals in the second period as Winberg drew the
Bulldogs even 3:13 into the period, but the Tigers once again
responded quickly as sophomore Sasha Sherry scored her fifth goal
of the season, which was also her team-leading 15th point. Junior
Julie Flynn had an assist on the goal.
Johnson helped the Tiger extend their lead to two goals two
minutes into the third period. Her fourth goal of the season was
set up by freshman Charissa Stadnyk. The goal proved to be the
eventual game winner as Elin Holmlov closed the scoring for the
Bulldogs in the final two minutes on the power play.
Young made 37 saves for the win, including a game-high 17 stops in
the third periods. Kim Martin made 27 saves in the loss.
Princeton climbed to 7-7-1 overall with the win while the Bulldogs
fell to 11-6-2. The teams complete their series tomorrow afternoon
at 3 p.m. CT.
