Black Bears Best Dutchwomen
ORONO, ME – The Dutchwomen’s hockey dropped the
first game of their two-game weekend series with Maine, 2-0, on
Friday at Alfond Arena on Maine’s campus. Senior goaltender
Lundy Day turned aside 29 shots as Union goes to 2-16-1. The Black
Bears improve to 4-13-1.
Day, who transferred from Maine prior to her junior year, made nine
saves in the first, seven in the second and 13 in the third. The
Calgary native is now only 139 saves away from becoming the
Dutchwomen’s all-time leader for career stops.
Despite being outshot 9-5 in the opening period, the Union defense,
backed by Day, stood strong keeping the home team off the board.
The Dutchwomen killed off two penalties and Day made her best save
of the first on a semi-breakaway down low by junior Jenna
Ouellette. Maine’s third leading scorer tried to go across
the crease from the left side, but Day got her shoulder on the
puck.
Black Bear junior Amy Stech broke the scoring drought with a goal
setup by freshman Dawn Sullivan and Oullette 2:31 into the
second.
Head coach Claudia Asano’s group battled hard generating 11
shots in the period and almost broke through on the power-play when
freshman forward Lauren Cromartie was denied at the last second off
a rebound in front.
A long outlet pass led to a breakaway and Maine’s second goal
by with 12 seconds remaining in the period. Senior captain Vanessa
Vani potted the goal with an assist by freshman Myriam
Croussette.
In the third, the Dutchwomen generated some odd-man rushes, but
solid back checking kept the visiting team off the board. Any
chances of a comeback slipped away as Union played just over the
final two minutes on the penalty kill.
Union finished the game with 19 shots and went 0-for-3 on the power
play. Maine had 29 shots and went 0-for-3 with the man
advantage.
The two teams square off again on Saturday at 2 p.m.
