Colgate Cannot Overcome Early Deficit
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -– Providence scored three goals in the
first period en route to a 6-2 to win over Colgate on Saturday,
Oct. 11 at Schneider Arena.
The Friars recorded two power-play goals and one short handed in
the opening frame to take a 3-0 into the first intermission.
Providence took the lead just 2:33 into the first when Mari
Pehkonen beat Raiders goaltender Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.)
during its first power-play. Pehkonen was assisted by Alyse Ruff
and Brittany Simpson. Providence would strike again on its second
power-play off a nice feed from Erin Normore to Laura Veharanta who
pushed the puck past Hamashuk. Ashley Cottrell would cap the first
period scoring for the Friars with an unassisted short-handed goal
to give Providence a 3-0 lead. Colgate out shot the Friars 15-10 in
the period but went 0-3 on the power-play while Providence went
2-2.
Providence opened the scoring in the second period recording the
only even strength goal of the game at 7:18 when Ruff found the
back of the net off an assist from Colleen Martin. The Raiders
would respond lighting the lamp for the first time at 9:10 when
freshman Kristi-Lyn Pollock (Virden, Man.) found the net for the
first time in her career, she was assisted by junior Katie Stewart
(Exeter, Ont.). The Friars answered back with their third
power-play goal at 16:32 of the second to regain a four goal
cushion 5-1. Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) recorded her first goal of
the season with a second to spare 19:59 to close the period 5-2.
Todd’s goal was assisted by senior tri-captain Kiira Dosdall
(Fairfield, Conn.). The Raiders’ out shot Providence in the
period 15-11 and out scored them on the power-play 2-1.
Colgate again out shot the Friars in the third 7-2 but could not
capitalize on it as Providence finished the scoring. The Friars
netted its fourth power-play goal of the night when Katy Beach slid
one past Colgate goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) at the
7:53 mark.
Plenderleith finished the night with 15 saves, while Hamashuk
stopped eight. The Friars’ were led in net by Genevieve
Lacasse who recorded a game-high 42 saves.
Colgate and Providence combined for 26 penalties on the night
while the Raiders went 2-9 on the power-play, the Friars went
4-11.
Colgate (1-2) hosts Niagara on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18 at
Starr Rink, both games are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
