Dutchwomen Downed By Catamounts
SCHENECTADY, NY - Despite two key Dutchwomen
goals in the second period, Vermont (1-0-0) rallied for a 7-2
victory at Messa Rink on Friday. Sophomore forward Marissa Gentile
(Groton, MA) tallied her team-high third point of the season for
the Union women's ice hockey team (0-3-0), finding the back of the
net at 14:08 of the second.
Freshman forward Kim Kowalczyk (Bartlett, IL) registered her first
career goal, Union's second of the game, at 17:28 of the second by
deflecting a shot by junior defender Jackie Koetteritz
(Breckenridge, CO).
Vermont sophomore defender Peggy Wakeham got her team on the board
3:05 into the first on with a power play goal set up by sophomore
forward Molly Morrison. The Dutchwomen applied the pressure
shortly after with a two-man advantage. At the blue line, freshman
defender Dania Simmonds (Aurora, ON) ripped a shot that was
deflected by a UVM player and struck the crossbar. Only seconds
latter Gentile had two chances form just inside the right face-off
circle, but UVM junior goalie Kristen Olychuck was up for the
challenge.
After Vermont freshman forward Erin Barley-Maloney and Morrison added a pair of goals to go up 3-0, Gentile answered with the team's third power play goal of the season. Freshman forward Molly Kate Devin (Scituate, MA) and freshman forward Lauren Hoffman (Marcy, NY) set up the goal. Carrying the momentum, the Dutchwomen struck again with Kowalcyzk goal and sent the game into the second intermission, 3-2.
The Catamounts took control early in the third with a goal by sophomore forward Celeste Doucet 5:10 into the period. Doucet also added UVM's final tally, which came at the 16:52 mark. Kyleigh Palmer and Teddy Fortin, who had a game-high three points, also contributed goals for Vermont.
Senior goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) turned aside 36 saves, increasing her career total to 1,193, which ranks fourth all-time in Union history.
At the other end, Olychuck made 12 saves in her team's first contest of the season. The two programs will be back at it tomorrow at Messa Rink, starting at 3 p.m.
