Saints Win Fourth Straight
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Senior captain Marianna Locke tallied the game-winning goal and classmate Alison Domenico delivered a goal and an assist as the No. 9 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team extended their winning streak to four games with a 3-2 victory over Brown University on Saturday afternoon in Providence, RI.
The Saints blitzed the Bears' goaltender Nicole Stock with 50 shots at Meehan Auditorium, outshooting the home team 50-23. Though Stock put forth an impressive 47-save performance, St. Lawrence junior goalie Brittony Chartier was able to keep Brown's rally one goal shy with a 21-save showing.
"Overall I think this was a very productive and important weekend for us," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells, whose team improved to 5-1-2 (2-0-0) with the win. "To go on the road against two tough ECAC Hockey teams in their buildings and come out with a pair of wins sets us up for next weekend."
First-year student Alley Bero opened the game's scoring at 8:32 of the first period with her fourth goal in three games while skating on the power play. Junior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer and rookie Vanessa Emond picked up assists on Bero's goal that made it 1-0.
Despite being outshot 23-9 in the second period, Brown was able to escape only trailing by a goal after forty minutes of play. The Bears pulled even at 1-1 with a power play goal by Andrea Hunter at 8:50 of the second period, but found themselves trailing again when Domenico scored her fifth goal of the season with 3:42 remaining in the stanza. Junior defenseman Britni Smith picked up the only helper on the goal that put St. Lawrence on top 2-1.
In the latter stages of the third period, the Saints were able to build their lead to 3-1 when Locke scored a power play tally with 6:15 left in regulation. Assists on Locke's third goal of 2008-09 came from junior Tara Akstull and Domenico.
Though Brown was able to pull to within one only 1:21 later on Jenna Dancewicz's first goal of the season, the Bears were unable to complete the comeback as the Scarlet and Brown's defense allowed only five shots in the third period.
"Brown has a tremendous women's hockey history, and they have
certainly played us tough over the years," remarked Coach
Wells. "They gave us everything we could handle tonight as
Nicole Stock played a great game."
The Saints finished 2-for-5 on the power play while Brown was
1-for-5. Senior Carson Duggan was held scoreless and remains
one goal away from breaking the University's career goals record.
St. Lawrence will be in action again next weekend, Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15 when they take on ECAC Hockey nationally-ranked foes Dartmouth and Harvard at Appleton Arena. The Saints and Big Green kick-off the series at 7:00pm on Friday, while the Crimson visit Appleton at 4:00pm on Saturday.
