Saints Stay Perfect Against Yale

Boxscore

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Six different players scored goals on Friday night for the No. 9 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team, including senior assistant captain Carson Duggan, whose 85th career goal tied the all-time University record.  The Saints (4-1-2, 1-0-0) captured an impressive 6-2 victory over Yale University at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT in their 2008-09 ECAC Hockey regular season opener.

With the victory, St. Lawrence improved to 26-0-1 all time against Yale (1-3-0, 0-2-0).

After a scoreless first period that saw the visiting Saints outshoot the Bulldogs by a 12-4 margin, the two teams exchanged goals only 13 seconds apart midway through the second period.  Junior defenseman Courtney Sawchuk scored her first goal of the season at 10:18 of the second period, with assists going to classmate Tara Akstull and Duggan.  However, Yale's Aleca Hughes would answer at 10:31 to tie the game at 1-1, with assists going to Bray Ketchum and Crysti Howser.

St. Lawrence would build a 3-1 lead in the following minutes, as senior Alison Domenico and first-year student Vanessa Emond would tally goals on Yale goalie Genny Ladiges only 1:25 apart.  Domenico's goal came at 13:37 of the second period, with helpers from classmate Lisa Batchelor and sophomore Karell Emard while Emond's first collegiate power play goal was assisted by Sawchuk and first-year student Alley Bero at 15:02.

Special teams would begin to play a major factor in the game following Emond's goal, as Yale would take only 20 seconds to respond with a power play score of their own to cut their deficit in half at 3-2.  Alyssa Clarke beat St. Lawrence netminder Brittony Chartier at 15:22 to cap a wild second period that included five goals in a span of 5:04.

Senior captain Marianna Locke would give St. Lawrence some breathing room with a power play goal only 1:47 into the third period.  Duggan, who picked up an assist on Locke's goal, would tie the University career goals record with a power play tally of her own and seemingly put the game away only 3:25 later at 5-2, with assists going to Locke and Bero.

Bero would then complete the game's scoring at 6-2 with her third goal in two games coming at 5:46, only 24 seconds after Duggan's record-setting mark.  Akstull was credited with her second assist of the evening on the goal.

"I thought Yale played hard, but our power play really started clicking in the latter half of the game," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells, who picked up his first career conference victory behind the bench.  "Carson has been a dynamic scorer since she got to campus, and for her to tie Sabrina Harbec's goal record is a pretty impressive accomplishment."

St. Lawrence finished with a 30-21 advantage in shots on goal and was 3-of-8 on the power play to Yale's 1-of-7 mark.  Chartier picked up the victory in net for the Saints with a 19-save performance while Ladiges suffered the loss having made 24 stops.

The Scarlet and Brown will look to pick up their fourth straight victory tomorrow, Saturday, November 8 when they head to Providence, RI to take on Brown University.  The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Bears at 4:00pm.
