Bobcats Earn First-Ever Win Against Raiders
HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team came from behind to defeat Colgate, 3-2, Friday night at Starr Rink. The win is the first ever for the Bobcats against Colgate, after having gone 0-12-1 in the past seven seasons. The win improves Quinnipiac's record to 1-2-0 in ECAC Hockey play and 2-9-0 overall. Colgate drops to 0-1-0 in conference and 5-5-0 overall with the loss. Freshman forward Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) recorded her first career points with a goal and an assist. Janine Duffy (Toronto, Ontario) and Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) also scored for the Bobcats.
The Raiders got on the board first with two goals in the opening period. Beth Rotenburg scored a short-handed goal 9:05 into the period with Clancy Todd assisting on the goal. Jacquie Colburne scored just over three minutes later. Krista Dermott assisted on Colburne's first goal of the season.
The Bobcats cut the Raiders' lead in half 11:58 into the second period. Quinnipiac's Duffy collected the puck in the neutral zone and passed to Brandice Moniz (Oakville, Ontario). The sophomore wing put a low shot on net. Wheeler picked up the rebound and snuck it by Colgate goaltender Lisa Plenderleith for her first career goal. The assist was Moniz's first of the season.
Quinnipiac tied the score, 2-2, at the 6:46 mark in the third period. Wheeler's initial shot was kicked into the slot by Plenderleith. Duffy collected the rebound and scored her fourth goal of the season as she shot the puck past the outstretched reach of Plenderleith. The assist was Wheeler's first of her career.
Flor scored the game winner with 4:56 remaining in the third period. Stacey Kmill (Thunder Bay, Ontario) intercepted a pass in the Bobcats' offensive zone and found Flor positioned in the front of the net. Flor drove a hard one-timer home for her first goal of the season.
Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart recorded 39 saves in net, while Plenderleith stopped 15 Bobcat shots.
"It was an awesome comeback," said Head Coach Rick Seeley. "We battled hard and Wishart made some great saves to keep us in the game."
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. as they square off with the Cornell Big Red at Lynah Rink.
