Quinnipiac Stuns Raiders
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Quinnipiac scored two
third period goals to stun the Colgate University women's hockey
team 3-2, Friday evening at Starr Rink. The loss for the Raiders
was the first-ever against Quinnipiac in 15 meetings.
Colgate opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first
period. Junior Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) recorded her third of
the season tipping in a rebound off a shot from senior Clancy Todd
(Thorold, Ont.) at the 9:05 mark. Sophomore Jacquie Colborne
(Calgary, Alta.) would follow three minutes later with her first of
the young season to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead into the first
intermission.
Sophomore goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) held the
Bobcats scoreless for nearly 32 minutes before Kate Wheeler found
the back of the net at 11:58 off a rebound to pull Quinnipiac
within one goal through two periods. The Raiders outshot Quinnipiac
24-10 through the first 60 minutes.
Colgate came out firing in the third period, but goaltender Tia
Wishart wouldn't let any thing slip by as she made save after save
to keep the Bobcats within striking distance. Janine Duffy tied the
game 2-2 around the seven minute mark before Kallie Flor recorded
the game winner with just under five minutes to play. Colgate
recorded 17 shots in the period to the Bobcats' eight, but it
wasn't enough.
The Raiders out-shot the Quinnipiac 41-18 for the game.
Plenderleith made 15 saves in the loss while Wishart recorded 39
for Quinnipiac. Colgate finished 1-3 on the power play while the
Bobcats went 0-2. Colgate 5-5 overall 0-1 in league play
will return to action tomorrow as it hosts Princeton at 4 p.m.
