Big Red Skates To Tie With No. 3 St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. -- Rebecca Johnston's three goals helped the
Cornell women's hockey team battle to a 4-4 tie against
third-ranked St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena
in Canton, N.Y. The tie gives the Big Red a hard-fought three-point
weekend on its swing through the North Country after Friday night's
victory at Clarkson.
The tie also snapped a 19-game losing streak for the Big Red women
against the Saints. Cornell improves to 6-5-2 on the year and 3-3-2
in ECAC Hockey, while St. Lawrence moves to 11-2-3 overall and
6-1-1 in league action.
St. Lawrence defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer opened the scoring at
the 8:54 mark of the first period, taking a feed from Vanessa Emond
at the point and ripping a shot past Cornell goaltender Jenny
Niesluchowski. That lead would evaporate when Johnston got her
first goal of the night, collecting a loose puck behind the St.
Lawrence goal and sliding to the front of the net and firing a
wrister under the crossbar.
In the second period, the Saints regained the lead when Emard
knocked in a rebound off a shot by Britni Smith at the 5:57 mark of
the period, with Johnston again responding. This time, just 1:37
later, she fired a low wrist shot between the legs of St. Lawrence
goaltender Brittony Chartier. Catherine White then added a goal for
the Big Red to put Cornell ahead at the 11:54 mark of the period
when Johnston slipped a puck into the crease for a shot by
Stephanie Holmes. That effort was saved with the puck resting on
the goal line, where White tipped it over the line for her seventh
goal of the year.
St. Lawrence tied the score just 2:28 into the third when Smith got
her second goal of the night, capitalizing on a scrum in front of
the goal that resulted in Niesluchowski well out of position, and
Smith calmly slotted the puck into the open net. Cornell fought
back once again, regaining the lead 41 seconds later when Johnston
jumped on a loose puck in the crease and knocked it past
Chartier.
With just 2:24 to play, however, the Saints knotted the score at
four. With St. Lawrence on the power play, when Alley Bero slotted
home a shot that put the home side back even. The two teams battled
through the overtime session, with Cornell out-shooting the Saints,
3-1, but Cornell could not get the game-winner.
The Cornell women are now off until Jan. 4, when they open a
two-game set at Lynah Rink against Providence.
