Harvard Nets Tie at UNH
DURHAM, N.H. -- Christina Kessler made 12 saves and Sarah Wilson
scored her seventh goal of the season on the power play to help No.
10 Harvard to a 1-1 tie at No. 7 New Hampshire Friday evening.
The Crimson was a perfect 7-for-7 on its penalty kill and scored
on one of it seven chances to move to 4-4-3 on the season.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first period at
the Whittemore, as the Crimson held a 6-1 advantage in shots. Each
team had two power-play chances, but neither squad could capitalize
in the frame. Harvard’s best chance of the period came with
about two minutes ago when Sarah Vaillancourt skated into the UNH
zone and left a drop pass for Jenny Brine. Brine collected the puck
and took a shot that bounced a few times before Wildcat netminder
Kayley Hermann kicked it away.
The Crimson had a two-skater advantage for almost two minutes at
6:22, but Harvard only managed only two shots on goal, including
one by Kathryn Farni on a 2-on-1 chance. After killing off both
penalties, UNH (8-4-4) scored the game’s first goal on a shot
by Jenn Wakefield at 10:03. Wakefield flipped the shot past Kessler
after receiving a pass from defender Kelly Cahill.
Harvard earned another 5-on-3 late in the second at 18:37, and
this time the Crimson capitalized, lighting the lamp on a score by
Wilson at 18:46. Vaillancourt and Kate Buesser were credited with
assists on the play after Buesser won the faceoff and played the
puck to Vaillancourt, who then slid it to Wilson towards the left
circle. Wilson took the puck and lifted it top shelf for her
team-leading seventh goal of the year to knot the game, 1-1. After
two frames, Harvard still controlled shots, leading 15-5, and also
had a sizable advantage in faceoffs, 24-13.
Vaillancourt almost gave the Crimson its first lead in a
short-handed situation at 16:45 when the senior forward hit the
left post on a slap shot from the top of the left circle. Harvard
kept pressuring the Wildcats, mustering another 16 shots on target
in the third, but none of them got through Hermann.
In the final minute of regulation, the Crimson kept possession of
the puck and managed two more shots on goal, but could not find the
go-ahead tally before the horn sounded. Harvard compiled 20 of the
24 shots in the third frame and led 35-10 in that category after
three periods.
In overtime, Wakefield skated into the Crimson zone against three
defenders and put the puck on net, but Kessler grabbed it at 2:15.
After the ensuing faceoff, Harvard skated down the ice and managed
two shots on goal by Vaillancourt and Anna McDonald. The latter
shot created a rebound in the crease, but Hermann covered up before
a Crimson skater could put it in the net.
With 30 seconds to go, Wakefield earned a one-timer from the slot,
but Kessler kicked the puck aside with her left pad.
The Crimson will return to Bright Hockey Center to host the
Wildcats Friday, Dec. 12. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
