Zorn's Short-Handed Tally Lifts Cornell
POTSDAM, N.Y. — The Big Red women’s hockey team
skated past Clarkson on Friday night to pick up a 3-2 victory.
Cornell ended a six-game winstreak for the Golden Knights and the
victory was the Big Red’s first over Clarkson since the
2003-04 season. Junior Liz Zorn scored a shorthanded goal in the
third period to win the game for the Big Red. Junior Jenny
Nieluchowski made 21 saves in net for Cornell. The Big Red improves
to 6-5-1, and is 3-3-1 against ECAC Hockey opponents.
Clarkson took the lead at 13:34 of the first period on a goal by
Brittney Selina. Juana Baribeau earned the assist.
Cornell put a quick damper on Clarkson’s celebration as
sophomore Karlee Overguard tied the game 12 seconds later. Junior
Stephanie Holmes picked up the assist.
Cornell took its first lead of the game at 5:33 of the second
period, when freshman Catherine White scored on the power play.
With Clarkson a man down after taking a hooking penalty, goaltender
Laura Dahm made the save off a shot from sophomore Rebecca
Johnston, but White buried the puck in the net to give Cornell the
goal advantage.
The Big Red was plagued by two tripping penalties late in the
second period. Clarkson took advance of the five-on-three advantage
and tied the game up at 2-2 at 16:18 of the second period when
Brittany Mulligan scored on the power play.
The two teams were deadlocked heading into the third period, and
Cornell was hit with a hooking penalty. Niesluchowski made some
impressive saves to keep her team’s lead. Clarkson misplayed
a face-off in its defensive zone, and Zorn picked up a bad pass and
flipped the game-winner over Dahm’s shoulder.
Niesluchowski earned her third win of the season in net for
Cornell. Dahm made 19 saves in the loss.
Cornell will play at St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon for a 4
p.m. game.
