Colgate Falls Short at St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. -- The No. 3-ranked St. Lawrence University
women’s hockey team scored one goal in each period en route
to a 3-1 win over Colgate University on Friday, Dec. 5 at Appleton
Arena.
Colgate (8-8-1, 2-4-1) took the lead in the opening period when
senior Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) lit the lamp with six seconds
remaining on the power-play at 12:12 mark. Clancy’s goal was
assisted by junior Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.). St. Lawrence
forward Lisa Batchelor responded a minute later re-deflecting
Alison Domenico’s shot past freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass
(East Amherst, N.Y.) to knot the score 1-1 at the first break.
The first period was very even as both squads recorded 10 shots
and one power-play opportunity apiece.
St. Lawrence (11-2-2, 6-1-0) recorded the only goal in the second
at the 4:17 mark when Carson Duggan was able to deflect Alley
Bero’s shot past Sass. Senior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield,
Conn.) had a great opportunity to tie the score five minutes later
when she split the Saints defense finding herself alone in front of
goaltender Brittony Chartier. Dosdall’s shot whistled past
Chartier’s right shoulder, but over the net.
Senior Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) would be tagged with a tripping
penalty with 27 seconds remaining in the second that would haunt
the Raiders in the third. The two teams again played an even period
with seven shots apiece, the goal by Duggan was the only
difference.
Saints forward Tara Akstull would record the final goal of the
night 45 seconds into the third off Brown’s tripping penalty
to give St. Lawrence the decisive 3-1 lead. Colgate had numerous
opportunities to bounce back as the Saints had to fight off a
double minor midway through the period. The Raiders out-shot St.
Lawrence 11-9 in the closing period, but it wasn’t
enough.
Sass finished the night with 23 saves, while Chartier recorded a
game-high 27.
Colgate hits the ice again tomorrow Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m.,
against Clarkson at Cheel Arena.
