Grant's First Goal Lifts Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore forward Bray Ketchum scored a pair
of goals, and freshman defenseman Heather Grant's first career goal
was the game-winner, as Yale beat Brown 4-1 Thursday night at
Ingalls Rink. Sophomore goaltender Jackee Snikeris made 15 saves
for the win.
Junior forward Caroline Murphy opened the scoring at 6:30 of the
first when she chipped in a shot from the point by junior
defenseman Alyssa Clarke with a bunch of traffic in front of Brown
goalie Nicole Stock. The Bears answered four minutes later on a
power play, as Sasha Van Muyen deflected Maggie Suprey's shot past
Snikeris to tie the game.
The Bulldogs were back on top before the end of the period,
however. Sophomore defenseman Samantha MacLean and senior
defenseman Helen Resor passed the puck back and forth after a
faceoff in the Brown zone, and Resor freed herself up for a slap
shot high in the slot. She did not get all of the puck, but it
wound up deflecting right to Grant, who stuffed it in from low in
the right circle for her first tally.
Yale (5-6-0, 3-4-0 ECAC Hockey) extended the lead with a
well-executed goal a minute into the second. Junior forward Mandi
Schwartz got the puck to Clarke, who then sent it right back to
Schwartz low in the right circle. Schwartz rifled a pass across the
ice to Ketchum, who came in behind Stock and roofed it for the 3-1
lead.
Brown (2-10-1, 2-5-0 ECAC Hockey) got its sixth power play early in
the third but could not use it to get any closer. Senior forward
Danielle Kozlowski and freshman forward Aleca Hughes both had key
blocks, and shortly after the Bears' power play ended Ketchum put
the game out of reach. Clarke took the puck at the Yale blue line
and fed it to Ketchum at center ice. She freed herself from one
defender with a nice move, then utilized another defender as a
screen to slip a wrister past Stock at the 11:43 mark for the 4-1
final.
Stock finished with 28 saves.
The Bulldogs are now off for 26 days for exams and holidays. They
host Providence on Dec. 30 at 3:00 p.m.
