Late Goal Lifts Princeton Over Quinnipiac
PRINCETON -- Junior defenseman Stephanie Denino scored a goal
and set one up in the final six minutes as the Princeton women's
hockey team skated to a 4-2 win over Quinnipiac on Tuesday night at
Hobey Baker Rink.
Denino netted her first goal of the season with 5:26 left in the
third period as her blast from the point gave Princeton a 3-2 lead.
Senior Christine Foster gave Denino the puck at the point and
Denino scored on a shot that Quinnipiac goaltender Tia Wishart got
a piece of, but wound up in the top of the goal.
A minute and 26 second later, Denino took a point shot off a
faceoff win by Foster, that freshman Julie Johnson redirected in
front of the net to give the Tigers a little bit of breathing room
late in the game. The goal was Johnson's second of the season.
The Tigers never trailed in the contest and went ahead for the
first time 4:04 into the contest when junior Julie Flynn scored her
first goal of the season on a one-timer of a pass from freshman
Charissa Stadnyk from behind the Bobcat goal.
Quinnipiac evened the scored in the 12th minute of the second
period on the power play when Chelsea Illchuk redirected a Melissa
Perry shot through a screen and into the Tiger goal. Princeton went
back ahead in the second period on freshman Paula Romanchuk's
team-leading sixth goal of the season. Junior Melanie Wallace took
the initial shot off a faceoff that Wishart got a piece of, but the
rebound laid in the crease for Romanchuk, who shoved it over the
goal line.
Princeton led 2-1 midway through the third period before the
Bobcats again evened things up. The goal was also scored on a
redirection as Evelina Husar deflected a Trudy Reyns shot. The goal
came on just the second shot of the period for Quinnipiac.
Princeton senior netminder Kristen Young made 18 saves for the win,
while Wishart stopped 32 shots in the loss. Princeton outshot
Quinnipiac 36-20.
The Tigers moved to 5-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the ECAC with the
win, while Quinnipiac dropped to 2-16-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the
league. Princeton is back in action on Friday afternoon against
Union at 4 p.m. at Baker Rink.
