Ryabkina’s Hat Trick Lifts Crimson

Boxscore

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore forward Liza Ryabkina recorded her first career hat trick and junior defenseman Cori Bassett had a career-high four points, including two goals and two assists, as No. 3 Harvard earned a 6-4 victory at Princeton Saturday afternoon.  Sarah Wilson added a goal and two assists and Jenny Brine collected three helpers for Crimson in the team's second straight win to open the season.

Harvard (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) had several early chances after Princeton was called for a tripping penalty at 00:57 of the first.  The Crimson managed five shots on net, including two by Anna McDonald that bounced through the crease, but Kristen Young was there to make the saves for the Tigers.

At 6:22, Liza Ryabkina put one through Young as she scored on a breakaway down the right side.  Kati Vaughn flipped Ryabkina the puck from the Harvard blue line and Ryabkina took it down the right boards.  As she moved in, the sophomore forward went to the backhand and chipped the puck over Young's right shoulder, making it 1-0 in favor of the Crimson.

With one minute left in the first, Vaughn flipped the puck towards the net from the point.  Young did not see the shot, as the puck bounced inches from the left post, narrowly missing the cage.  Harvard headed into the first intermission with a one-goal lead and a sizable 21-5 advantage in shots after one.

The Crimson came out flying in the second as well and made it a 2-0 game on a tally by Cori Bassett at 3:05.  Jenny Brine passed the puck to Anna McDonald, who took a shot on net, creating a rebound to the side. Bassett picked it up and fired for her first score of the year.

After a penalty on Harvard for holding at 4:59, Princeton's Charissa Stadnyk cut the Crimson lead in half after blasting a slap shot from the right point.  Sasha Sherry was credited with an assist on the play for the Tigers (1-3-0, 0-2-0).

At 12:22, Bassett tallied her second goal of the contest when she scored on an unassisted shot from just outside the left circle.  The Crimson had just killed off a penalty and had moved the puck into the Princeton zone.  Bassett collected a loose puck and ripped a shot that went past Young's glove and into the net.

The Crimson added another power-play score later in the period on Ryabkina's second tally of the day.  Off a faceoff in the Princeton end of the ice, Bassett and Sarah Wilson moved the puck to the right side, finding Ryabkina for the goal at 16:05.

Harvard added two more power-play tallies in the third by Wilson and Ryabkina.  Wilson collected her first goal of the year at 7:13 after receiving help from Brine and Wilson.  Ryabkina completed her hat trick with a power-play score at 8:54, as Brine earned her third assist of the day.  Wilson was also credited with an assist on the play.

Princeton netted three straight goals in the final 10:22 of the third, but could not get closer than, 6-4, as Harvard's defense would not let the Tigers get any closer.

Harvard held the final edge in shots, 36-21, and was 3-of-10 with an extra attacker.  Princeton scored twice out of eight power-play chances.  Kessler stopped 17 shots, while Young made 30 saves for the Tigers.

The Crimson will return to Cambridge, Mass., for a two-game homestand next week against Rensselaer and Union Nov. 7-8.
