Clarkson Salvages Tie at Niagara
Freshman Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) scored midway through the
third period as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team
salvaged a 3-3 tie at Niagara University on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 3-2 early in the third, Baribeau connected for her fourth
goal of the season, finishing off assists from senior Marie-Jo
Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) and junior Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE)
at 11:53 to even the game for the 10th-ranked Golden Knights.
Similar to Friday’s 3-1 loss to the Purple Eagles, Clarkson
jumped out to the early lead at Dwyer Arena, but could not hold it.
Sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) tallied her second
power-play goal of the weekend, putting in her fourth goal of the
year with 1:54 remaining in the opening stanza. Junior Tegan
Schroeder (Lumsden, SASK) and freshman Brittany Mulligan (London,
ONT) set up the goal. Six minutes into the second, the Green and
Gold took a 2-0 lead with Gaudet’s team-high 6th goal of the
year. Sophomore Caitlin Oleksa (Battle Creek, MI) and Baribeau
assisted.
Niagara (1-8-1) started its comeback with Mary McKinnon’s
goal at 12:58 of the middle frame, and then tied it up just 33
seconds into the third as Ashley Riggs scored. Riggs tallied again
at 5:08 to give the Purple Eagles the 3-2 advantage.
The Knights held a significant advantage in shots to start the
game with a 14-4 margin in the opening 20 minutes, but Niagara
controlled the second and third period, outshooting Clarkson 27-13.
Both teams had three shots in the five-minute overtime session. The
Purple Eagles ended up with a 34-30 shot advantage.
Sophomore Eve Grandmont-Berube (Drummondville, QUE) posted 31
saves.
Clarkson was 1-of-3 on the power play, while Niagara was 1-of-4
with the man advantage.
The Knights, at 2-4-2, open ECAC Hockey play at Brown next Friday.
