ALBANY, N.Y. -- The first night of the final
weekend before postseason action begins answered some of the
playoff questions, but not all. We now know the four teams
who have clinched home-ice; Harvard, St. Lawrence, Clarkson, and
Dartmouth, but the number five-eight seeds are still a bit blurry
and will be settled today.
No. 1 Harvard 3 at Colgate 2: Forward Sarah
Vaillancourt scored the game-winning goal shorthanded on a
breakaway with 2:28 remaining in the game to lead the Crimson to a
dramatic victory over Colgate. Netminder Christina Kessler
made 20 saves for the Crimson and Raiders' goaltender Lisa
Plenderleith made 24 stops for Colgate. Colgate outshot
Harvard in both the first and second periods, but after a 13-6
advantage in the third, Harvard ended up with a 27-22 edge in
shots. Colgate went 0-for-5 on the power play and the Crimson
went 1-for-6 with the man-advantage.
At No. 6 St. Lawrence 9, Princeton 2: Junior
forward Marianna Locke scored her second hat trick of the season
while senior Annie Guay became the 13th player and first defenseman
in Saints' history to reach the 100-career point mark as the Saints
handled the Tigers in Appleton Arena. St. Lawrence used a
five-goal second period to put the game well out of the Tigers'
reach. The Saints finished 3-of-6 with the extra skater to
Princeton's 0-of-4 mark. They also held a 32-18 advantage in
shots on goal in the game.
At No. 9 Clarkson 7, Quinnipiac 1: Four
different players recorded power-play goals for the Golden Knights
as they clinched home ice in the first round of the
postseason with a rout of Quinnipiac. Freshman Lauren Dahm
made 14 saves for Clarkson, while Tia Wishart made 23 saves through
35 minutes and Jaime Miller made 16 saves in 25 minutes for the
Bobcats. Clarkson finished 4-for-7 on the power play, while
Quinnipiac went 1-for-5. Golden Knights' forward Marie-Jo
Gaudet netted two goals in the contest.
No. 10 Dartmouth 5 at Cornell 1: Dartmouth
got goals from five different skaters and took a three-goal
lead in the first period to cruise past Cornell and clinch
home ice for the first round of the ECAC Hockey tournament next
weekend. Forwards Sarah Parsons and Maggie Kennedy each had a
goal and added an assist for Dartmouth. Big Green's junior
netminder Carli Clemis pushed aside 25 saves and for the 18th time
this season she recorded 20 or more stops between the pipes.
Cornell goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski faced 38 shots in net and
made 33 stops of her own.
At Brown 2, Rensselaer 1: The Bears
received first-period goals by freshman Erica Kromm and sophomore
Erin Connors on their first two shots of the game that proved to be
the difference in the win over the Engineers. Brown's junior
goaltender Nicole Stock made 35 saves to make the lead hold up for
the Bears, who picked up their first home win of the season, and
Ashley Mayr stopped 14 shots for the Engineers in defeat. RPI
was one-for-nine on the power-play, with the Bears failed to score
on six chances.
At Yale 2, Union 1: The Bulldogs found
themselves trailing 1-0 against a Union team they had never lost
to. Yale would rally for two goals in the third period to
hold off the upset-minded Dutchwomen 2-1. After junior
defenseman Helen Resor tied the game, sophomore forward Caroline
Murphy scored the game winner with 3:20 left giving the Bulldogs
the lead. Senior goaltender Shivon Zilis made 17 saves to
outduel Union's Lundy Day, who made 40.
