Weekend Update: High Drama Begins

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The presence of on-ice leadership and clutch plays are not disappointing the hockey fans, as the first weekend of the final stretch of the season unfolded last evening. 

No. 6 St. Lawrence 3, at No. 9 Clarkson 1:  St. Lawrence wins the North Country bragging rights for another night, as it downed rival Clarkson in a match-up of top 10 teams.  The Saints extended their winning streak to six games, as senior forward Chelsea Grills tied the school's career power-play goal record with the 23rd of her career, while freshman defenseman Michelle Zimmerman added a goal and an assist for the Scarlet and Brown. Senior goaltender Meaghan Guckian stopped 22 shots for the Saints, while freshman netminder Eve Grandmont-Berube stopped 15 shots for the Golden Knights.  Each team netted one power-play goal in the contest.

At Quinnipiac 2, Union 1:  The Bobcats recorded their first ECAC Hockey win of the season with a victory over Union.  Junior forward Elyse Cole scored both Bobcats goals, including the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in the contest.  Senior defenseman Courtney Chais scored the lone goal for the Dutchwomen,  The Bobcats finished the game out-shooting the Dutchwomen 35-19.  Quinnipiac was 1-6 on the power play, while holding Union to 0-3 with the man advantage.  Freshman Tia Wishart recorded her first collegiate win with 18 saves, while junior Lundy Day made 33 saves in the loss.

No. 1 Harvard 4, Brown 1:  Sophomore defenseman Kathryn Farni and freshman forward Liza Ryabkina tallied goals in the opening period, and sophomore netminder Christina Kessler made 25 saves, as the Crimson topped Brown.  Kessler won her 17th game in net, pushing aside 13 Brown shots in the third period, while Bears' junior netminder Nicole Stock made 31 saves.  For the game, Harvard led in shots, 35-26, and won 33 of 64 faceoffs.  The Crimson was 1 for 7 on the power-play, while the Bears were 0 for 7.  Harvard has now scored a power--play goal in 14 of its 19 games.  Senior forward captain Rylee Olewinski had Brown's lone goal late in the third period. 

Cornell 3 at, Colgate 2:  Cornell got a late power-play goal in the second period from senior forward Caeleigh Beerworth to lift the Big Red to a victory over the Raiders.  The win marks the Big Red's first victory over Colgate since the 2001-02 season.  It was Beerworth's second of the game and 10th of the season.  Junior forward Sam Hunt and sophomore forward Beth Rotenberg tallied goals for the Raiders.  Colgate battled in the third period to get the equalizer, putting 15 shots on net to Cornell's nine.  Sophomore goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski got the win in goal for the Big Red stopping 36 attempts, while freshman netminder Lisa Plenderleith turned away 26 for the Raiders.

At Princeton 4, Rensselaer 3 (ot):  Captain Lizzie Keady's wrister found the back of the net at the 2:47 mark of overtime to give the Tigers a home win versus the Engineers.  Rensselaer got two late goals with under two minutes remaining from junior defenseman Melanie Guillemette and junior forward Nicole McDonald to send the game into the extra session.  Princeton outshot Rensselaer 24-22 and converted on one of its two power plays.  The Engineers, who held a 38-27 faceoff edge, went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Yale 3, at Dartmouth 3 (ot):  In a game where goals came in spurts, Dartmouth took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but Yale answered with two goals in a span of 25 seconds to earn a  tie.  Junior forward Crysti Howser had a three-point night for the Bulldogs, while sophomore forward Sarah Parsons scored once for the Big Green and added an assist.  Junior Carli Clemis made many game-saving stops in net for the Big Green and totaled 28, while counterpart freshman Jackee Snikeris was equally as sharp stopping 31 attempts.
