ALBANY, NY -- Victories by Harvard and St.
Lawrence keep them tied at the top of the ECAC Hockey standings and
make today's 4 p.m. showdown that much more special; ECAC Hockey
teams fall to non-league opponents.
At Harvard 5, Clarkson 0: The first of two
opening-period goals by freshman Katharine Chute was all Christina
Kessler needed, as the sophomore goalie posted her third straight
shutout in the No. 5 Harvard women's hockey team's 5-0 win against
10th-ranked Clarkson Friday night at Bright Hockey Center.
Junior Sarah Vaillancourt notched a goal and three assists to help
the Crimson (5-0-0, 5-0-0) become the nation's last remaining
unbeaten team. Senior Caitlin Cahow assisted on three Harvard
goals, as juniors Sarah Wilson and Jenny Brine also made the
scoresheet. The Crimson continued its power-play dominance,
scoring on two of its three chances on the advantage and killing
all five power plays by the Golden Knights (10-3-2, 3-2-0). Kessler
made 22 saves for her sixth career shutout. Harvard has not allowed
a goal in its last 206 minutes, 13 seconds of play. The
Crimson gets another test from a ranked opponent Saturday, as No. 3
St. Lawrence visits Harvard at 4 p.m.
At Dartmouth 3, St. Lawrence 4: Junior
forward Alison Domenico, playing for the first time since November
3rd, scored the go-ahead power play goal with only 51 seconds
remaining in regulation as the No. 3/2 St. Lawrence University
women's hockey team knocked off previously unbeaten Dartmouth 4-3
in Hanover, NH on Friday evening. With the win, St. Lawrence
(9-2-0, 5-0-0) now boasts the nation's longest unbeaten streak at
eight games while the loss snapped the Big Green's three game
win-streak over the Saints and moved them to 6-1-1 (4-1-0) on the
season. Senior forward Chelsea Grills and sophomore forward Tara
Akstull also each extended their active point scoring streaks to
nine games as each player landed on the score sheet against
Dartmouth.
At Princeton 1, Mercyhurst 3:
Mercyhurst broke open a scoreless game with two goals in the second
period and went on to defeat the Princeton women's hockey team 3-1
on Friday night. Junior Christine Foster scored Princeton's
lone goal in the loss. After a scoreless first period that
saw junior Annie Greenwood appear to open the scoring, only to have
her goal waved off, the seventh-ranked Lakers jumped on the
scoreboard when Stephanie Jones scored her fifth goal of the season
on the power play. Melissa Dianoski took a shot from the faceoff
dot that Princeton junior goaltender Kristen Young stopped, but
Jones shoved the rebound by her to put the Lakers on top. Meghan
Agosta made the score 2-0 four minutes later when she capped an
end-to-end rush by sliding the puck under Young. Agosta's
second goal of the game came 4:32 into the third period when she
scored from the top of the slot off a feed from Sherilyn Fraser to
put Mercyhurst ahead 3-0. Princeton finally broke through 14
seconds later when Foster netted her third of the season, but could
come no closer. Greenwood and junior Katherine Dineen added assists
on the goal. Young finished the game with 33 saves, while
Mercyhurst goaltender Courtney Drennen made 19 saves for the win.
Princeton fell to 4-5-2 with the loss.
At Brown 2, Robert Morris 4: While finally
able to break through for two power play goals, the Brown women's
ice hockey team (1-7-1) lost to Robert Morris at Meehan Auditorium
on Friday afternoon, 4-2. The Bears held a 1-0 lead heading into
the second period, but three Robert Morris goals in a span of under
five minutes, all of which came on deflected shots from the point,
to take the lead and notch the eventual game-winner. In the first
period, Brown outplayed its guests on all fronts, outshooting the
Colonials 14-4, taking two penalties to RMU's five, and scoring the
game's first goal. On a five-on-three, during which there were
actually three Robert Morris players in the penalty box, freshman
defenseman Erica Kromm skated in from the right point and sent a
waist-high shot through traffic and past goaltender Brianne
McLaughlin. The goal was the first of Kromm's career, and sophomore
Sasha Van Muyen and senior Rylee Olewinski picked up helpers on the
play.
At Colgate 2, Wayne State 4: Wayne State
scored four unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes of the game to
defeat Colgate, 4-2 last night, dropping the Raiders' record to
3-7-1 overall. Colgate Junior Elin Brown banged home a
rebound off a shot by freshman Hannah Milan for the Raiders' first
goal. The Raiders made it 2-0 at the 6:28 mark on the power
play. Freshman Jessi Waters had the puck at the right point, and
she found sophomore Marissa Dombovy just to the left of the crease.
