ALBANY, N.Y. -- Women's ECAC Hockey teams will take
part in 14 games around the country, including five league contests
on Friday and Saturday, highlighted by No. 7/6 ranked Harvard's
first official games of the 2007-08 season.
Princeton-Quinnipiac at Dartmouth-Harvard:
Heading into the 2007-08 season ranked No. 7/6 nationally, with its
usual high expectations of competing for ECAC Hockey and NCAA
titles, Harvard will open regular-season play this weekend
matched-up against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. on Friday and Princeton at
3 p.m. on Saturday. Anchoring a balanced Crimson attack is
All-ECAC Hockey selection defenseman Catilin Cahow, who plays a big
role on both ends of the ice, where she averaged (0.93)
points-per-game last season. Also hosting a two-game set this
weekend will be Dartmouth. The Big Green is coming off a
thrilling weekend where they took two Hockey East opponents -
Vermont and Boston University - to overtime, winning one and
earning a tie in the other. Dartmouth sophomore forward Jenna
Cunningham was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Monday,
tallying three goals and two assists over the weekend for the Big
Green. Quinnipiac will look to rebound from dropping two league
contests last week to No. 4/4 ranked St. Lawrence 6-1 and to
Clarkson 3-1. Through five games this season, the Bobcats have had
eight different players score goals, while 10 different players
have registered a goal or an assist. Princeton enters the
weekend with a record of 1-1-1 in league play. The Tigers
recorded their first win of the season last weekend by downing
Clarkson by a score of 3-2.
Yale at Brown : The Bears open their home
schedule this season by hosting Yale in league play. Brown
suffered its first taste of defeat this season on Saturday, taking
a 3-1 loss to Rensselaer. Junior assistant captain goaltender
Nicole Stock made 31 saves in the loss, while sophomore forward
Erin Connors scored the Bears' lone goal off an assist from
sophomore forward Andrea Hunter Brown continues its
homestand by welcoming No. 8/8 UConn in a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee
game. Yale took three points on its season-opening trip to
RPI and Union last weekend, tying the Engineers 1-1 Friday and then
beating the Dutchwomen 3-2 Saturday. Junior forward Sarah
Tittman scored a pair of goals, doubling her total from last year,
while senior goalkeeper Shivon Zilis stopped 32 of 33 shots Friday
night at RPI for the tie. The Bulldogs killed off seven of
eight opponent power plays in the two games.
Non-Conference: The No. 4/4 ranked St.
Lawrence Saints end their four-game road trip by visiting Wayne
State at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. With their
two road victories, last weekend the Saints climbed two spots to
No. 4 in the national polls. The Saints have received strong
play on the defensive-end of the ice, having only allowed one goal
in 37 power-play-chances (.97.3%).
The longest journey of the season closes out a lengthy six-game
road trip for Clarkson when it gets on the bus one more time,
traveling to Orono, ME this weekend to face off against the
Blackbears in a two-game series. Freshman Lauren Dahm
backstopped the effort in Friday's win over Quinnipiac, posting 15
saves. Dahm was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for her effort
last weekend.
Cornell, which is 2-2 on the season, is also on the road this
weekend. The Big Red travel to Niagara for a two-game set at
7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Coming up short in overtime last night to No. 8/8 UConn, Rensselaer
will look to start another winning streak when it hosts
Northeastern at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Houston Field
House. The Engineers are 5-2-1 on the young season.
Coming-off two tough losses last weekend, despite strong
goaltending from junior Lundy Day, who stopped 84 of 88 shots in
two games, earning her Goaltender of the Week honors, Union will
travel to Boston University to take on the Terriers at 3 p.m. on
Saturday.
