Commissioners' Cup Release
Undefeated Harvard Tops UConn in Women's Commissioners' Cup Race
Only one game was played this past weekend in the WOMEN'S
COMMISSIONERS' CUP series and ECAC Hockey used it to pull ahead of
the WCHA. Here's a look at the sole contest:
Harvard 2, Connecticut 0 (at Allston, MA):
Undefeated Harvard remained so with this dominating 2-0 win over a
good UConn squad. The Huskies stayed in the game due to the
goaltending of Jennie Bellonio, who kept Harvard off the board for
nearly 53 minutes. The Crimson outshot UConn 15-3 in the first
period and 15-5 in the second, and yet the game was knotted at 0-0
after 40 minutes. Harvard finally got on the board at 12:53 of the
third on Sarah Vaillancourt's eighth goal of the season. Jenny
Brine added a goal at 16:50. Bellonio finished with 42 saves while
Christina Kessler stopped all 14 shots sent her way.
There is just a single game this week in the series, the final game until January 13. And it is a good one as No. 3 in the country Minnesota-Duluth (WCHA) visits #4 St. Lawrence (ECAC Hockey) Saturday. The first game of 2008 also matches schools who have been nationally ranked this year as Boston College (Hockey East) plays at Minnesota (WCHA) on January 13.
