ALBANY, N.Y. - Last weekend's action helped
solve some postseason questions as six teams are now assured
postseason spots. The puzzle is still not complete as four
teams will fight for two home ice spots and three teams will battle
for the final two spots.
No. 1-ranked Harvard remained perfect in league play by clinching
its fifth ECAC Hockey title, downing Princeton 3-1 in a
come-from-behind win. Freshman forward Kate Buesser tallied
the game-winner for the Crimson with five minutes remaining in the
contest. League-leading scorer Sarah Vaillancourt and Randi
Griffin also tallied goals for Harvard, while netminder Christina
Kessler made a season-high 30 saves to pick up her 22nd
victory. Harvard would earn its 14th consecutive win the
following day, blanking Quinnipiac, 4-0, as Kessler set a new NCAA
Division I single-season shutout record.
The Scarlet and Brown, who have already nailed down the No. 2 seed
in the ECAC Hockey Tournament, picked up an additional four points
last weekend with wins over Yale and Brown, 5-3 and 3-2,
respectively. The No. 6-ranked Saints have won three in a row
and will have home ice in the postseason.
No. 9-ranked Clarkson scored two wins last weekend scoring five
goals in each contest, while only surrendering one goal. With
her four-point effort in the win over Brown, Britney Selina set a
new school-record for points in a season with 40 for the Golden
Knights.
Freshman forward Rebecca Johnston scored three goals and added one
assist in helping the Big Red to road victories at Union and
Rensselaer. Sophomore netminder Jenny Nieluchowski was solid
between the pipes showcasing a 1.50 GAA and .936 save percentage in
the two wins for Cornell.
The Big Green re-entered the No. 10 spot in the national polls, as
they picked up three league points with a defeat of Quinnipiac,
6-0, and an overtime tie at Princeton, 2-2. Dartmouth
was led by senior forward Carrie Thompson, who netted her first
collegiate hat trick.
Colgate earned its seventh consecutive playoff bid with a weekend
split on its visit to the Capital District. The Raiders
bounced back from a 3-2 setback to Rensselaer Friday to defeat
Union, 4-1. Junior forward Sam Hunt scored her 100th career
point on an unassisted goal versus the Dutchwomen.
The Tigers picked up one league point last weekend in two
hard-fought contests. Princeton jumped out to an early 1-0
lead over the Crimson, but could not hold it. The Tigers, who
salvaged a tie the following day versus Dartmouth, were gritty all
weekend, outshooting both top 10 teams on the weekend.
Rensselaer kept its postseason aspirations alive with a one-goal
win over Colgate. Junior goaltender Ashley Mayr stopped 30
shots in getting the win.
