Kelly Joins Quinnipiac Staff

Quinnipiac University today announced that Matt Kelly will join the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team coaching staff as an assistant coach. The announcement was made by Michael Barrett, women's ice hockey head coach, and Jack McDonald, director of athletics and recreation.

Kelly comes to Quinnipiac from Wayne State University in Detroit where he was a volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. Kelly's responsibilities included the designing and implementing of a comprehensive Goaltending Practice as well as providing one-on-one, goalie specific training with the men's and women's ice hockey teams.

"We are thrilled to have Matt Kelly join our staff," Barrett said. "Matt comes to us highly recommended after gaining valuable experience as the volunteer goaltender coach at Wayne State University for their men's and women's programs."

Kelly was a four-year member of the Wayne State men's ice hockey team as a goaltender, serving as a captain during his senior campaign in 2005-06. That season, Kelly also received College Hockey America All-Conference Second Team honors as well as winning the CHA/Easton Three Star Award while also being named Wayne State's Most Valuable Player. Kelly was also named to the CHA All-Academic Team and the 2004 CHA All-Tournament Team. He played three years of Junior A hockey in the United States Hockey League prior to his collegiate career, splitting time between the Cedar Rapids Roughriders (1999-2000 and 2000-01) and the Topeka Scarecrows (2001-02).

"I'm very excited to be here at Quinnipiac University and to be given a chance to work with their women's ice hockey team," Kelly said. "ECAC Hockey is arguably the best women's hockey league at the college level. I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing against national ranked teams. I'm also excited to coach and compete at the TD Banknorth Sports Center, which is an amazing facility."

A native of Hull, Mass., Kelly graduated from Wayne State in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts and Studies. He was a member of the Dean's List.

"We look forward to having Matt work with our goaltenders," Barrett said. "He'll also be heavily involved with our video analysis and will also contribute to our recruiting efforts."
