Colgate Hands Out Team Awards

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Colgate University women's hockey team held its annual team banquet on Monday, April 14 at Seven Oaks Clubhouse. Head Coach Scott Wiley presented the team's annual awards and announced captains for the 2008-09 season.

For the second straight season, junior Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) was honored with the Brad Houston Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. Hunt led the team in scoring with a team-best 22 goals and 14 assists for 36 points. Her 22 goals set a program record for the most tallied in a single season. She also led the team in power-play goals with six, short-handed goals, with three, and game winners, with five. The third-team all-ECAC Hockey selection, Hunt hit many milestones this season, including scoring her 100th career point and 50th career goal.

Junior Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player for the second consecutive year. Dosdall led the blueliners in scoring with five goals and 12 assists for 17 points, and blocked 19 shots. A key member of the Raiders' special teams, Dosdall tallied three of her five goals on the power play, and tallied one short-handed goal and one game winner. She was named third-team all-ECAC Hockey and was a member of the ECAC Hockey all-academic team.

Earning the Most Improved Player Award was freshman Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.). Colborne played in all 34 contests and scored seven goals and chipped in three assists for 10 points. Highlighting her play was Colgate's 1-0-1 weekend with top-10 teams St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Colborne earned the first star of the game when she scored two goals in Colgate's 5-2 win over St. Lawrence, and tallied the lone goal in a 1-1 draw with Clarkson the following day. She was named to the ECAC Hockey honorable mention list on three occasions.

Rookie of the Year honors was presented to netminder Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.). Plenderleith started in 29 of 34 games and posted an 11-14-4 record. Her 11 wins marks the second most wins by a goaltender in Colgate history. She posted a .902 save percentage and a 2.50 goals against average. Her first career start was a memorable one, as Plenderleith stopped 41 shots in a 1-0 loss to No. 3 New Hampshire. Her efforts landed her on the USCHO Web site as the National Defensive Player of the Week. She went on to match her career high save total against Cornell in February.  The regular season ended with a spectacular effort by Plenderleith, making 24 stops as Colgate nearly defeated top-ranked Harvard in February. Plenderleith was named ECAC Hockey Rookie or Goalie of the Week one time each, and was a nine-time honorable mention pick.

Senior Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, Alaska) was a double winner, taking home the Sportsmanship Award and the Don Palmateer Award. The Don Palmateer Award is presented by the Center Ice Club to the player whose leadership, inspiration and performance on and off the ice during her career has had the greatest impact on Colgate women's hockey. A leader on the ice and in the locker room, Wolgemuth has acted as team captain the past two seasons. Her impact on the team was evident on Jan. 11 when she scored her first career goal and her teammates rushed to celebrate with her highly-anticipated accomplishment. Wolgemuth chipped in two assists, one of which was the overtime game-winning goal over Yale, and blocked 16 shots. She most recently was named to the ECAC Hockey all-academic team.

Fellow classmate Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) received the Marian LeFevre Memorial Coach's Award. Johnston has been a steady contributor to the Raider blue line and has been an assistant captain the past two seasons. She played in all 34 contests this season and collected 10 assists, two goals, and 18 blocked shots. Johnston tallied one of the fastest goals in Colgate's Division I history, scoring on nationally-ranked Mercyhurst just 30 seconds into the second period in November.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Coach Wiley announced captains for the 2008-09 season. Leading the Raiders next year will be Hunt, Dosdall and Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.).
