National Team Named USOC Team of Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- After capturing its second-ever world title last month at the International Ice Hockey Federaton (IIHF) World Women's Championship in Harbin, China, the U.S. Women's National Team has been named the U.S. Olympic Committee's Team of the Month for April.

The Americans beat Canada, the reigning World and Olympic champion, an unprecedented two times during the world championship, including by a 4-3 count in the gold-medal game. The Canadians had not lost in 29 straight games. In addition to the two wins over Canada, Team USA earned victories over Switzerland and Germany and outscored opponents by a 23-8 margin.

Former Harvard standout Angela Ruggiero, the 2004 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner, was named the top defenseman by the Directorate, while Harvard defenseman Caitlin Cahow was named one of Team USA's best players of the tournament. Former Harvard standout Julie Chu, the 2007 Patty Kazmaier Award recipient, was also a defender on the U.S. squad at the IIHF World Championships.
