
Hunt, Johnston and Smith Win Gold
RAVENSBURG, Germany -- Colgate's Sam Hunt, Cornell's Rebecca Johnston and St. Lawrence's Britni Smith won the 2008 European Air Canada Cup as a member of the Canadian National Under-22 Team in Ravensburg, Germany on Sunday, January 6.
It marked the sixth straight title for the Canadians at the event and helps them cap off the 2007-08 season with a perfect record for the first time in history.
Participating in the Cup were the national teams from Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Canada began its quest on Thursday, Jan. 3 with a 13-2 thrashing of Russia in the Group B Preliminary. Canada then posted a 7-0 shutout over host Germany on Friday, Jan. 4 before reaching the semifinals with Sweden. Russia and Germany are ranked No. 6 and No. 5, respectively, in the world rankings.
Canada topped Sweden, ranked No. 3 in the world, 7-2 in the semifinals on Saturday, Jan. 5. Hunt scored a goal and chipped in an assist in the win. Hunt gave Canada a 2-0 lead six minutes into the game, when she picked up a pass from Emmanuelle Blais (Minnesota-Duluth) and drove down the wing to beat goaltender Kim Martin (Minnesota-Duluth) five hole. Hunt then helped Melanie Gagnon score a power-play goal in the second, extending Canada's lead to 5-1.
On Sunday, Canada rolled to a 7-5 victory over No. 4 ranked Finland as Johnston had a goal and an assist each to help Canada claim the European Air Canada Cup for the sixth consecutive year.
