Clarkson Completes Sweep, Blanks Wayne State

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Following up on Friday's 7-1 win over Wayne State, Clarkson continued its standout play in its season-opening weekend with another dominating victory on Saturday as the Golden Knights shut out the Warriors 7-0 at Cheel Arena.

Junior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) and sophomore Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) sparked the offense with two goals and one assist apiece. Senior Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) tallied one goal and two assists. Sophomore defenseman Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) and freshman Rebecca Gordon (St. Catherines, ONT), with her first collegiate goal, rounded out the goal-scoring. Eleven different Knights recorded an assist in the balanced effort.

Freshman Eve Grandmont-Berube (Drummondville, QUE) posted 15 saves to record the shutout in her Clarkson debut.

Clarkson excelled again on specialty teams, going 3-of-5 on the power play, while killing off all five of Wayne State's chances. For the weekend, the Knights went 6-11 with the man-advantage and shutdown all 10 of the Warriors' man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson made quick work on its first power-play, with Gaudet scoring just 16 seconds into the man-advantage at 10:40. Gaudet one-timed a pass from Beazer with senior Amanda Dittmer (Chatham, ONT) also assisting.

The Knights clicked again on the power-play at 15:23 when Lavoie connected on a 5-on-3 advantage with junior Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) and freshman Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) setting up the goal.

One minute later, Gordon put the Green and Gold on top 3-0 in the opening frame, scoring her first collegiate goal by stuffing in a loose puck in front with senior Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) and freshman Caitlin Oleksa (Battle Creek, MI) assisting.

Midway through the second period, Gaudet coverted again on the power play to make it 4-0. Taking just seven seconds in the man advantage, Gaudet tallied her second goal of the game and fourth of the weekend at 9:53. Senior captain Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) and Beazer assisted.

Clarkson went on top 5-0 at 15:28 of the second with Lavoie's second goal of the game and third of the weekend. Positioned at the top of the crease, Lavoie knocked in a short rebound off a shot by Waldie. Sophomore Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) also assisted.

The Knights added two more goals over the final 20 minutes to complete a 14-goal weekend. Beazer scored her second of the series at 8:57, followed by Eusepi's first of the year at 15:15.

At 2-0, Clarkson hosts Niagara University next weekend at Cheel Arena.
