Wright Pushes RPI Over Brown
TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Allison Wright (Oakville, ON/Oakville)
tallied two goals, including the game-winner and added an assist to
lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team
to a 3-1 victory over Brown University in ECAC Hockey action this
afternoon. The Engineers, who are now undefeated in their last six
contests, improve to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play. The
Bears fall to 1-1-0.
Notted at 1-1 entering the second frame, Wright, who assisted on
the game's first goal, scored the go-ahead tally at the 5:30 mark
for Rensselaer. Intercepting the puck in the neutral zone off of a
Brown player, Wright broke in on Bears goalie Nicole Stock (Buffalo
Grove, IL/Connecticut Polar Bears) for the unassisted tally and a
2-1 advantage.
Early in the third period, Wright once again found the back of the
net for RPI after corralling a pass from junior Melissa Boik (Allen
Park, MI/Michigan Capitals) from the opposite end of the ice.
The Engineers opened the scoring in the first frame with a goal by
sophomore Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary's). On the
power play, forward Whitney Naslund (Bloomington,
MN/Bloomington Jefferson) corralled the puck from Wright and sent a
shot to Weidner in the near circle. Chipping the puck up in the
air, it bounced off the shoulder of Bears goalie Nicole Stock
(Buffalo Grove, IL/Connecticut Polar Bears) and in at 8:13.
Brown wasted little time in scoring the equalizer as sophomore Erin
Connors (Newburyport, MA/Assabet Valley) capitalized off a rebound
at 16:28. Classmate Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY/Syracuse Stars)
earned the assist on the tally after her shot was saved by RPI
goalie Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), who was
unable to control the rebound, which went out to Connors.
The Engineers, which outshot Brown, 34-12 in the contest, including
23-5 in the final two periods, saw van der Bliek stop 11 shots to
improve her personal record to 3-0-0. Stock recorded 31 saves in
the Bears' loss.
Rensselaer returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts
nationally-ranked Connecticut at 7pm at the Houston Field House.
Brown will battle league traveling partner at home on Saturday at
2pm.
