Union Blanked by Wayne State
DETROIT, MI - The Wayne State women's hockey team picked up its first shutout win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Union College at City Ice Arena Saturday afternoon. The Warriors improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Dutchwomen drop to 0-6.
Union came out with intensity in the first period, outshooting the Warriors, 10-6 in the frame, including two shots in two power-play opportunities.
Meagan Beck (Niskayuna, NY) sent up a long clearing pass to Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) 45 seconds into the game, but Wayne State netminder Valery Turcotte kept the scoreboard blank with a glove save.
Midway through the stanza Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) struck a rebound from a Beck shot from the point, but this time Turcotte made the stick save.
Wayne State took advantage of a pair of power-play opportunities in the middle frame, including a -minute five-on-three. Union killed the two-man advantage, but Sam Poyton lit the lamp for the Warriors at 9:46 with a delayed penalty goal. Tina Vanderhoeven passed down from the point to Melissa Boal who slid the puck across the slot to Poyton, who was waiting at the doorstep.
Katrina Protopapas gave the Warriors a two-goal lead at 17:16 with her second goal of the season. Brandi Frakie drew the puck back to Protopapas off a faceoff to the left of Union goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) to earn the assist.
Wayne State collected two more goals in the final period, first at 9:50 when Lindsay DiPietro took a pass from Christine Jefferson and charged in the zone, dangling the puck as she dragged it across the crease before sliding in a backhanded shot for her second goal of the season.
Emily Berzins capped the scoring at 18:47 when she jammed in a rebound from Jefferson's shot that Day had saved high on her body.
Union had a 50-second two-man advantage midway through the final frame. Callee Heywood (Innisfail, AB) slid a shot that meandered close to the goal line, but her shot found the post and bounced out of the crease.
Day made 32 saves in the loss, while Turcotte earned the shutout with 16 saves.
Wayne State held a 36-16 shot advantage in the game after being down, 10-6, after the first period.
The Dutchwomen return to Messa Rink to open ECAC Hockey play on Friday, October 26, against Brown at 7 p.m. Union then hosts Yale for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday.
