Union Cannot Stop Wayne State
DETROIT, MI - Junior Melissa Boal (Pakenham, ON) scored a career-high five goals as the Wayne State women's hockey team handed Union a 7-1 defeat at City Ice Arena. The Warriors registered their first win of the season, and pick up points for College Hockey America in the 2007-08 Commissioners' Cup. Union drops to 0-5-0 on the season.
The Dutchwomen took an early 1-0 lead when junior Gabriela Wintner (Calgary, AB) tipped in a shot from Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN) at 3:14 of the first period.
Union took advantage of the early power play, converting for the first time since February 10, 2007, when the Dutchwomen netted a man-up goal at Yale. Just under a minute into the opportunity tonight, Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QC) centered the puck from just behind the net to Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI), but Wayne State netminder Valery Turcotte (Jonquiere, QC) poked the puck away as it came across the crease.
Wayne State (1-2) answered right back at 4:54 when Boal jammed in a loose puck for her first goal of the night. The Warriors edged ahead at 17:38 with a goal by Sam Poyton (Hamilton, ON), seconds after the Dutchwomen killed off their second penalty of the frame.
Boal notched a pair of goals in the middle frame to complete the hat trick and give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. She struck first at 5:22, beating Union goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) high on her blocker side, and then roofing the puck at 8:46 for the three-goal lead.
Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ) had Union's first shot of the frame midway through the second period on a two-man rush. Her shot ricocheted off a Wayne State defender and found its way to the net, only to be thwarted by Turcotte's stick.
Boal added two third-period goals, first coming short-handed on a 4-on-3 at 5:40 of the stanza, followed by a breakaway goal off a mid-ice draw at 5:48.
Poyton capped the scoring at 10:08 with a one-timer at the near post off a centering pass from Boal on the power play.
Day made 15 saves in the first 40 minutes before giving way to Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA), who made four saves in her first 20 minutes of action this season. Turcotte made 12 saves in her first win of the season.
The Dutchwomen face off against the Warriors again Saturday at 4 p.m., before returning home to open ECAC Hockey play against Brown (10/26) and Yale (10/27).
