Princeton Falls to Mercyhurst
PRINCETON, NJ -- Mercyhurst broke open a
scoreless game with two goals in the second period and went on to
defeat the Princeton women's hockey team 3-1 on Friday night at
Hobey Baker Rink. Junior Christine Foster scored Princeton's lone
goal in the loss.
After a scoreless first period that saw junior Annie Greenwood
appear to open the scoring, only to have her goal waved off, the
seventh-ranked Lakers jumped on the scoreboard when Stephanie Jones
scored her fifth goal of the season on the power play. Melissa
Dianoski took a shot from the faceoff dot that Princeton junior
goaltender Kristen Young stopped, but Jones shoved the rebound by
her to put the Lakers on top. Meghan Agosta made the score 2-0 four
minutes later when she capped an end-to-end rush by sliding the
puck under Young.
Agosta's second goal of the game came 4:32 into the third period
when she scored from the top of the slot off a feed from Sherilyn
Fraser to put Mercyhurst ahead 3-0. Princeton finally broke through
14 seconds later when Foster netted her third of the season, but
could come no closer. Greenwood and junior Katherine Dineen added
assists on the goal.
Young finished the game with 33 saves, while Mercyhurst goaltender
Courtney Drennen made 19 saves for the win. Princeton fell to 4-5-2
with the loss, while the Lakers are now 9-2-2. The teams complete
their series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
