Cornell Falls in Overtime
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's
ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime heartbreaker at Niagara on
Friday night in a game filled with special team's goals. Rebecca
Johnston, Liz Zorn, and Kelly McGinty all scored for the Big Red.
Freshman Kayla Strong made 29 saves in net for the loss. Cornell is
2-3 for the season, while Niagara improved to 3-1-1.
The Purple Eagles' Venla Heikilla put her team on the board for the
first time at 18:01 of the first period on the power play. Megan
Price and Marie Henriksen assisted on the goal.
The Big Red's Rebecca Johnston scored her fourth goal of the season
to tie that game at one all at 8:43 of the second period. Her
power-play goal was assisted by Karlee Overguard and Melanie Jue.
Niagara once again grabbed a one goal lead with a power play goal
by Price at 18:52 in the second period.
Zorn tied the game up once again with a little over 30 seconds left
in the period. Caeleigh Beerworth had the assist.
McGinty scored her first career goal short handed to give the Big
Red its first lead of the night at 6:13 of the third period. Amber
and Karlee Overguard both picked up the helpers.
Niagara pulled its goalie in favor of an extra attacker late in the
third period. The move would prove to be lethal to the Big Red when
Heikkila scored to tie the game at three.
Sending the game to overtime, Henriksen scored the game-winner
short handed for Niagara at 3:05.
Strong moves to 1-1 on the season for the Big Red. Niagara
goaltender Jill Zelonis stopped 19 of Cornell's shots. The Purple
Eagles were three for 10 on the power play.
The Big Red will face off against Niagara again tomorrow afternoon
for a 2 p.m. start in Dwyer Arena.
