Harvard Shuts Out Brown

Box score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Harvard women's hockey team allowed just 14 shots-one in the third period-on the way to a 2-0 win against Brown Saturday afternoon at Bright Hockey Center, the Crimson's fourth straight victory to start the season.

Senior Caitlin Cahow and sophomore Anna McDonald scored goals for the Crimson (4-0-0, 4-0-0 ECAC Hockey), and Christina Kessler made 14 saves for her second straight shutout. She has not allowed a goal in the last 146 minutes 13 seconds of play.

The Crimson put 47 shots on net, and Nicole Stock kept the game close with 45 saves for the Bears (1-6-1, -1-5-1) in a game that was relocated to Cambridge after a mechanical failure at Brown's Meehan Auditorium.

Harvard went ahead on a first-period power-play strike from Cahow. Sarah Vaillancourt gave her a beautiful setup. The junior skated down the left wing, drew multiple Brown defenders to her at the post and sent the puck across the goal to Cahow, who put in her second score of the season. Vaillancourt has notched a point in every game this season and leads the squad with five assists and seven points.

The Crimson got 18 shots on goal in the second period, but Stock was up to the task. Brown killed two Harvard power plays, and got five of its eight second-period shots on a power play of its own.

The third period was all Crimson, as Harvard outshot Brown, 16-1. McDonald gave her team some breathing room at the 8:50 mark, getting the puck from freshman Katharine Chute and scoring from just below the circle on the left side. The Bears registered their only shot of the period early on, and the Crimson had the final 14 shots of the game.

The Crimson recorded 11 shots and Cahow's goal on its four power plays. Brown was 0 for 4 on the man advantage, totaling just two shots on its three power plays in the first and third periods.

Harvard will look to keep its winning streak going at home next weekend, when it hosts Clarkson Friday and St. Lawrence.
