Big Red Rallies Past No. 10 Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ - The Big Red women's ice hockey team was down 3-0 to Princeton before scoring six unanswered goals to win, 7-4 over the Tigers Friday night. Cornell improves to 4-4-1 overall (1-1-1 ECAC Hockey) while Princeton fell to 3-4-2 (1-4-1). Freshman Kayla Strong made 18 saves in net for the Big Red in the win.

The Tigers' Sonja Novak scored a power-play goal at 13:11 of the first period to put Princeton up 1-0 going into the first intermission.

Princeton would score two more goals in the first half of the second period to go up, 3-0. Sophomore Liz Zorn scored her sixth goal of the season to put the Big Red within two at 13:37 of the second period. Freshman Amber Overguard assisted on the goal. Amber Overguard scored less than a minute later on a power play, with the assists going to Melanie Jue and Hayley Hughes.

In her first collegiate game, freshman Katie Bredice scored Cornell's game-tying goal at 15:03 off a feed from Rebecca Johnston. Three minutes later, Hughes netted the go-ahead goal, with Caeleigh Beerworth and Brittany Forgues earning the assists. Zorn scored her second goal of the game with nine seconds left in the second period to take a two goal advantage. Johnston assisted on the goal.

With a 5-3 lead after two periods, senior Brianne Schmidt scored at 6:55 of the third to put Cornell up, 6-3. Novak scored her second goal of the game for the Tigers less than 30 seconds later, making the score, 6-4. Johnston scored her seventh goal of the season at 9:12 of the third period to move Cornell to a final 7-4 advantage.

Kristen Young made 19 saves for Princeton in the loss. Strong earned her second win of the year in net for the Big Red.

Cornell will face Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon on the road for a 3 p.m. start.
