Cornell Ties Brown
Box scoreITHACA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Liz Zorn's power play goal with two seconds left in regulation tied up the women's hockey's game against Brown in Lynah Rink Saturday evening. Neither team was able to score in overtime, leaving the game tied at two goals apiece in ECAC Hockey action. The tie earns the Big Red its first point in ECAC Hockey action moving to 3-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. Brown falls to 1-3-1, and 1-2-1 ECAC Hockey.
The Big Red controlled play in the first half of the opening period of hockey, but Hayley Moore's shot during a power play would put Brown up 1-0 at 9:58 of the first period.
Despite being down by a goal, Cornell continued to out play the Bears. With Jaclyn Small in the penalty box for Brown, the Big Red took advantage of the extra player to tie the game with 34 seconds left in the period. Cornell had complete control of the puck with the entire Big Red offense setting up the goal-scoring play. Freshman Amber Overguard scored her first goal of the season, sending the puck flying past the shoulder of goaltender Nicole Stock. Brianne Schmidt and Melanie Jue picked up the assists.
At 2:02 of the second period, Stock played the puck from the Brown defensive zone up the ice to Sasha Van Muyen. Van Muyen made the pass to Erin Connors, who scored to put the Bears up by a goal.
Brown held its lead throughout the second and almost all of the third period. Stock was stellar in between the pipes for the Bears robbing Cornell of numerous scoring opportunities.
The Big Red pulled Strong in favor of the extra attacker with 1:02 left in the game. Cornell created a few more scoring chances with the extra player, but was unable to get past Stock. With 13 seconds left in the game, Samantha Stortini was sent to the penalty box for hitting after the whistle. The Big Red sent Strong back between the pipes, and continued play with the five on four advantage. Cornell continued to dominate play, and with a mere two seconds left on the clock, Zorn buried the puck to tie the game at two. Laura Danforth and Karlee Overguard assisted on the goal.
Despite out-shooting Brown, 10-4 in overtime, the two teams left the ice deadlocked. The Big Red outshot Brown, 47-32 overall.
The Big Red will hit the road next weekend to take on Quinnipiac and Princeton.
