Yale Uses Third-Period Outburst to Beat Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- A dramatic third-period turnaround helped the
Yale women's hockey team keep its unbeaten streak intact Friday
night at Cornell, as the Bulldogs got five goals from five
different players to erase a 2-0 deficit. That included a pair of
goals in a span of 14 seconds by sophomore forward Denise Soesilo
and junior forward Crysti Howser.
After a scoreless first period in which Cornell put just one shot
on net, the Big Red got goals from Karlee Overguard and Caeleigh
Beerworth (on a power play) in the second to take the 2-0 lead.
A tripping call against Cornell (3-4-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) early in the
third gave the Bulldogs the chance they needed. Yale's power play
unit was fourth in the country (4 for 16) entering the day, and
after being denied on their first opportunity this night the
Bulldogs capitalized on their second. Freshman forward Bray
Ketchum's goal, assisted by sophomore forward Mandi Schwartz, got
Yale (3-0-1, 3-0-1 ECAC) on the scoreboard at 3:40.
Three minutes later, junior forward Sarah Tittman's goal, assisted
by Ketchum, tied the score at two. It was Tittman's third goal in
four games, tripling her output from all of last season.
With a pair of quick strikes the Bulldogs then seized control.
Howser delivered her first goal of the season, assisted by
sophomore defenseman Alyssa Clarke, to break the tie with 5:40 left
in the game. Fourteen seconds later Howser assisted on Soesilo's
goal that quickly gave Yale some breathing room. Clarke's empty-net
goal with 4:28 left capped the scoring.
Senior goaltender Shivon Zilis finished with 13 saves, while
Cornell's Jenny Niesluchowski had 18. Clarke, Howser and Ketchum
all finished with a +/- of +4, and Howser won 18 of 28
face-offs.
Yale visits Colgate Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
