Yale Rally Sinks Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Big Red women's hockey team
gave up a two-goal lead in the third period to fall to Yale 5-2 on
Friday night after the Bulldogs attacked with a late rally.
Freshman Karlee Overguard and senior co-captain Caeleigh Beerworth
both scored for Cornell in the second period. Yale remains unbeaten
early in the season with a 3-0-1 record, while the Big Red moves to
3-4 overall and 0-1 in ECAC Hockey.
The Big Red and the Bulldogs skated to a scoreless first period of
hockey with Yale out-shooting Cornell, 7-1.
Cornell found momentum in the second period of play and would take
a 1-0 lead off a goal by Karlee Overguard. Beerworth had the puck
at center ice and fed it ahead to Brianne Schmidt. Receiving the
pass at the right side of the net, Overguard flipped the puck up
past the goaltender's shoulder at 4:09 of the first period.
The Big Red had a five-on-three advantage three minutes later after
two Bulldogs' players received body checking penalties less than a
minute apart. Karlee Overguard grabbed the puck out of the deep
right corner behind the Yale net and fed it to Laura Danforth at
center ice. Danforth's pass found Beerworth on the left side of a
wide open net, and Beerworth buried the puck to give the Big Red a
2-0 lead.
Despite being down by two goals, the Bulldogs came out fast in the
third period. Yale pulled within a goal at 3:40 of the third
period, when Bray Ketchum scored on the power play. Sarah Tittman
tied the game a little more than three minutes later off a pass
from Ketchum.
With the game tied at two, Yale's Crysti Howser scored the go-ahead
goal at 14:20 of the third period. Alyssa Clarke picked up the
assist. Fourteen seconds later, Denise Soesilo scored again to go
up 4-2.
The Big Red pulled goaltender Jenny Niesluchowski with 4:32 left on
the clock in favor of an extra attacker in hopes of pulling within
a goal. Alyssa Clarke scored on the empty net to put Yale up, 5-2.
Niesluchowski made 18 saves in net, while the Bulldogs' Shivon
Zillis made 13.
Cornell will be back in action Saturday afternoon, when it will
play host to Brown in Lynah Rink. The puck will drop at 4 p.m.
