Colgate Powers Past Brown
HAMILTON, NY - Taking advantage of three of its five power
plays, Colgate (1-5-1, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) defeated the Brown
women's ice hockey team (1-4-0, 1-3-0 ECAC Hockey), 4-1 on Friday
night. The Raiders scored their first two goals in a 16-second span
in the first period, then pulled away with two more in a span of
1:44 in the third for the win.
With the game scoreless, Brown penalties at 8:41 and 9:50 in the
first gave Colgate a five-on-three advantage for 51 seconds. The
Raiders did not need that long, as junior Elin Brown scored off an
assist from junior Sam Hunt just 24 seconds in at 10:14 to take
give her team a 1-0 lead. Colgate kept the pressure on, winning the
ensuing faceoff and driving the puck into the Brown zone, peppering
the net with two shots before senior Kara Leene scored at
10:30.
The teams were scoreless until 6:52 in the second, when Brown
halved the Raider lead. Skating on the penalty kill, the Bears
pushed the puck into the offensive zone and sophomore Kath Surbey
(Calgary, ALB) put a shot on net right as freshman Samantha
Stortini (Sudbury, ONT) came out of the box at 6:50. The initial
shot was stopped, but junior Frances Male (Toronto, ONT) put the
rebound home for the first Brown goal of the evening.
Colgate would seal the victory with two goals in the third. The
first, another power-play strike, came from freshman Hannah Milan,
who scored off a pass from Brown at 5:10. Junior Laura Jansen
scored the Raiders' lone even-strength goal of the evening at 6:52,
when her shot from the left point found its way through Brown
junior Nicole Stock's (Buffalo Grove, IL) five-hole.
Stock had 27 saves in the loss, while Colgate freshman Lisa
Plenderleith stopped 18 shots for her first career win.
On Saturday, the Bears will travel to Ithaca for a 4 p.m. game with
Cornell (3-4-0, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey).
