Yale Cannot Solve Colgate
NEW HAVEN, CT -- Colgate broke open a 2-1 game with a pair of
goals in the third period, including an empty-netter, to beat Yale
4-1 Friday night at Ingalls Rink. Junior forward Maggie Westfal
accounted for the Bulldogs' lone goal.
Yale (8-8-1, 5-6-2 ECAC Hockey) had some grade-A chances early in
the first period, but junior defenseman Helen Resor hit the post
after stealing the puck in the Colgate zone, and Raiders goalie
Lisa Plenderleith (21 saves) denied sophomore forward Caroline
Murphy when sophomore forward Mandi Schwartz led her with a nice
pass from the neutral zone.
Right after the Plenderleith save Yale senior goaltender Shivon
Zilis broke up a chance for the Raiders' Katie Stewart with a poke
check, but a faceoff in the Yale zone after that led to the game's
first goal. Zilis got a piece of the initial shot with her glove
but Elin Brown was positioned perfectly for the rebound at the 9:40
mark.
Three penalties on the Bulldogs in a span of five minutes kept Yale
on the defensive for the rest of the period. After killing off
those penalties the Bulldogs were burned by one early in the
second, as Kiira Dosdall's shot from the right point deflected in
at 3:17 to make it 2-0. Ironically, it was the only shot on goal
the Raiders would get during their five power plays for the
night.
The Bulldogs crept closer when Resor drew a tripping call on the
Raiders. Junior forward Crysti Howser won the faceoff in the Raider
zone, sending the puck back to Resor. She slid it across to
freshman forward Bray Ketchum in the right circle, and Ketchum's
shot appeared to be tipped by junior forward Sarah Tittman on its
way to the net. Plenderleith stopped that try with her right leg
but Westfal controlled the rebound and knocked it in at the 9:14
mark.
Zilis had to make a pair of big saves in the third to keep
the Raiders (9-11-3, 6-5-2 ECAC Hockey) within reach, making a pad
save on a short-handed chance for Sam Hunt six minutes in and then
grabbing Jacquie Colborne's chance with her glove while sprawled
out on the ice with 10 minutes to play. Marissa Dumbovy's tricky
forehand shot after spinning around in the slot eluded her to make
it 3-1 with seven minutes to play, and Hunt added an empty-netter
with 36 seconds remaining for the 4-1 final.
Zilis finished with 23 saves.
Yale hosts Cornell Saturday afternoon at 4:00, Youth Day at Ingalls
Rink.
