Mercyhurst Overwhelms Quinnipiac
ERIE, Pa. -- Breana Burton (Surrey, B.C.) scored the Bobcats' lone goal in a 7-1 loss to No. 7 Mercyhurst at the Mercyhurst Ice Center Friday night. Tia Wishart (Vancouver Island, B.C.) looked impressive in stopping 48 shots in goal for Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are now 3-17-4 on the season, while the Lakers improve to 18-5-2 with the win.
The Lakers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Meghan Agosta's 32nd goal of the season just 2:22 into the opening period. Just under four minutes later, Mercyhurst's Cassea Schols made it a 2-0 game.
Mercyhurst added three more first period goals to make it 5-0 at the end of the first, including another Agosta tally at 12:32.
Burton scored a power-play goal on a rebound in front of the net 7:43 into the middle period, bringing the Bobcats to within four, 5-1. Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) blasted a shot on net from the point that Mercyhurst goaltender, Nicole Nelson, kicked away. Brandice Moniz (Oakville, Ontario) jumped on the loose puck, but was also denied before Burton jammed home the rebound goal. The goal was her second of the year, while Flor picked up her seventh assist of the season.
Moniz's helper was her tenth of the season, becoming the first member of this year's team to record double-digits in any one scoring category.
Mercyhurst scored two more goals, one in the second period before adding another in the final frame for the victory. Natalie Payne recorded four assists on the night for the Lakers.
Wishart played outstanding as she turned away 48 Mercyhurst shots, including 18 in the second period. Some of those saves in the second were a series of pad saves, stopping both Agosta and Valerie Chouinard on the doorstop after the two had been controlling the puck deep in their offensive zone.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. as they play the final game of the two-game series with Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa.
