
Cornell Sails Past Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Cornell women's hockey
team sailed past Brown, 5-1, on Friday night in ECAC Hockey road
action. The Big Red scored midway through the first period and
never looked back as it improved to 9-9-1 overall this season and
has a 6-6-1 record in league action. Brown fell to 3-14-3 overall
and is 2-9-2 in ECAC Hockey play. Freshman goaltender Katie Wilson
earned the win in her first collegiate start for Cornell.
Senior co-captain Brittany Forgues put the Big Red on the board for
the first time at 9:10 of the first period when she scored on the
power play. Freshman Amber Moore and sophomore Melanie Jue assisted
on the goal.
Twenty-nine seconds into the second period, senior co-captain
Caeleigh Beerworth lengthened Cornell's lead to two when she netted
the puck past Brown goaltender Nicole Stock. Defensemen Steph
Ulrich and Sam Wauer picked up the assists.
Nineteen seconds later freshman Rebecca Johnston scored again for
the Big Red off assists by Hayley Hughes and Karlee Overguard.
At 7:58 of the second period, Nicole Brown scored for the Bears on
the power play to put Brown on the board for the first time.
With less than three minutes left in the game, sophomore Laura
Danforth scored for the Big Red off a pass from Caeleigh Beerworth.
Karlee Overguard scored the Big Red's fifth goal with less than a
second left in the game. Johnston and Jue picked up their second
points of the night on the assists.
Wilson made 25 saves in net for Cornell in her first complete game.
Stock made 37 saves for Brown.
The Big Red outshot Brown 42-26 for the night.
Cornell will return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, January 26 for a
4 p.m. start at Yale.
