Two Straight for Dutchwomen

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Gabriela Wintner (Calgary, Alb.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Union College women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at Messa Rink. The Dutchwomen, who also received goals from Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, Colo.) and Kelly Fleming (Lake Placid, N.Y.) improve to 3-17-2 on the season.

The Pioneers (6-12-1) struck first as Carla Pentimone took feed from Kristina Hankins and bounced it off of Union goaltender Danielle Kimble (Reston, Va.) for her fifth goal of the season at 4:08.

The Dutchwomen answered back on the power play courtesy of Fleming. Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, Que.) quickly shot a pass from Wintner, but her shot was blocked. Fleming picked up the puck and brought it to the slot before firing high past the glove side of Sacred Heart goaltender Sara Perry.

Wintner gave Union a 2-1 lead midway through the first with her third goal of the season. Stephanie Gilbert (Salt Lake City, Utah) stripped the puck from a Sacred Heart defender in the left circle and brought it low before sliding it to Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Pocock handled the puck below the goal line and skated it toward the net before sliding it across the crease to Wintner, who flipped it in at 9:27.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Taryn Lapierre collected an unassisted tally 11 seconds later. Lapierre's shot appeared to be saved by Kimble, but the puck scooted under the junior to knot the game at 2-2.

Union outshot Sacred Heart, 13-6, in the first period, and kept the offense going in the second to hold a 33-15 advantage by the end of the middle stanza.

Koetteritz won the puck along the right boards in the neutral zone and chipped it ahead to Suzanne Ostrow (Boise, Idaho). Ostrow carried the puck into the Pioneers' zone with Koetteritz coming around to her left before sliding it across to the sophomore who flipped it in at the near post at 6:54 for her first goal of the season and a 3-2 lead.

Sacred Heart outshot Union in the final frame, 8-4, and collected several quality opportunities, including a shot in two power-play chances, but Kimble kept the Pioneers from evening the score.

Kimble finished with 21 saves in her first win of the season, while Perry made 34 stops in the loss.

Union finished 1-for-4 on the power play while holding Sacred Heart 0-for-3.

The Dutchwomen resume ECAC Hockey play on Friday, January 25, in a 7 p.m. game against Clarkson. Union will host St. Lawrence the following afternoon at 4 p.m.
