Dartmouth Skates to Tie at BC

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's hockey team took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but could not hold off Boston College as the Eagles earned a 2-2 tie with Dartmouth on Sunday night at Kelley Rink.

After a slow start from the Big Green, senior Carrie Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) put Dartmouth on top 1-0 with 11:13 left in the first period on a nice tip-in at the top of the crease. Thompson redirected a pass infront from junior Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) and it founds it way through the legs of Boston College goaltender Molly Schaus for Thompson's sixth of the season.

The Eagles (8-9-5) would even the score with 8:48 remaining as Deb Spillane kept up with the play after junior netminder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) made the stop on her initial shot and tucked the puck inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.

Freshman Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) gave the lead back to Dartmouth with 49 seconds left in the period when she broke in a 2-on-1 opportunity and fired a wrist shot top shelf in the right corner of the net for the 2-1 lead.

Both teams were just about even in shots after one period with Dartmouth posting a 13-12 advantage. Clemis made 11 saves in net, while Schaus was equally impressive with 11 of her own.

Dartmouth (11-6-3) received it first power play chance of the evening 2:41 into the second period, but the Big Green could only put one shot on net before being called for tripping with 41 seconds remaining on the man advantage. Dartmouth earned another power play opportunity at the 11:10 mark and once again the Eagles were up to the challenge as they blocked multiple shots from the point.

Schaus made seven saves in the second period and Clemis kept Dartmouth ahead with six stops, including a couple of point-blank saves.

In the third period, Boston College knotted the score at 2-2 on a goal by Meghan Fardelman with 11:25 left in the game. She missed her first shot on net, gathered the rebound and scored on a shot from the right circle.

With 8:12 remaining, the Eagles had a great chance to take their first lead of the game as Allie Thunstrom skated in from the right side and snapped off a shot that got by Clemis and rang off the post. The Big Green got its third look at the power play 5:37 left and Dartmouth managed four shots on net, but Schaus made all four stops.

At the one minute mark of the final stanza, junior Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) almost gave Dartmouth the lead as she intercepted a pass at her own blue line and had a clear path to the goaltender, but she was denied by Schaus.

In the extra session, Boston College had two great scoring chances, but Clemis came up big for Dartmouth. Early in the overtime she pushed aside a shot an open shot in the slot and with 50 seconds left Clemis stoned Thunstrom again on a breakaway to preserve the tie.

Clemis finished the night with 27 saves, but the night belonged to Schaus who made 46 saves for the Eagles. Dartmouth outshot Boston College 48-29 in the game, including a 22-8 advantage in the third period.

Dartmouth will be back on the road next Sunday, January 27, as the Big Green travel to Ivy League foe Harvard for a 2 p.m. face-off at the Bright Center.
