Day, Ostrow Spark Union
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior goaltender Lundy Day (Calgary, ALB)
recorded her first career shutout victory and freshman
forward Suzanne Ostrow (Boise, ID) had two goals and an assist
to lead Union College to a 4-0 over Sacred Heart University at
Messa Rink Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improved to 2-17-2
after this non-league contest, while the Pioneers fell to 6-11-1.
It was the second triumph for Union over Sacred Heart this season,
as the Dutchwomen were 7-1 winners in Bridgeport, CT on November
27, and Union's first shutout victory of the 2007-08 season.
Day, who recorded a 0-0 shutout tie against Quinnipiac earlier this
season, made 23 saves in the win. She made 12 of those stops in the
second period. Union also got goals from Courtney Chais
(Plantation, FL) and Stephanie Gilbert (Salt Lake City, UT).
The Dutchwomen had a 35-23 shot advantage and had 15 shots on Sarah
Perry (Sudbury, MA) in the second period.
Union opened the scoring with 23 seconds remaining in the first
period. Ostrow fed Chais, who scored her third goal of the season,
from the top right circle. The Dutchwomen made it 2-0 with 3:40
elapsed in the second stanza. Sophomore defenseman Jackie
Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO) passed to Ostrow high in the right
circle and the freshman forward beat Perry for her third goal of
the winter and a 2-0 Union lead.
Just 18 seconds after Ostrow's first goal of the game, Gilbert
tallied on a drive from the left side of Perry for a 3-0 Dutchwomen
lead. Gabriela Wintner (Calgary, AB) and Elsa Perushek (Maple
Grove, MN) provided the helpers on Gilbert's first goal of the
season. Union closed out the scoring when Kelly Fleming (Lake
Placid, NY) fed Ostrow in the slot, and the freshman fired it over
Perry's right shoulder at 14:24.
The two teams meet again Sunday at Messa Rink at 3 p.m.
